For the most part, I *love* this game. It is without peer.

UNTIL the late-game, that is. I'm currently playing a game in the mid 1960s and it takes nigh on 15 minutes to play just one turn with NEAR-CONSTANT hard drive swapfile activity.

Sooo....

that being said, is it my system that is the issue?

Athlon 64 3000+ socket 939 1800MHz
ATI AiW 9600
512 MB dual-channel DDR

Let me know if this system sucks out loud or whether it's just a case of massive code bloat.

Your ram is kind of low, especially if you're running windows xp. You might want to buy a 512mb stick, only costs about $40-50 nowadays. In the meantime try Harkonnen's memory patch. My time between turns was cut in half after I installed it, even in the modern era. You're still going to have some slowdown but it won't be near as bad.

Hey, thanks! I'll give that a try when I get home tonight...

Only problem with the RAM I have is, it's 512 built by two 256 DIMMs.

So, I'll have to up it to 2x512 or even 2x1024.

So, you think the graphics card is OK?

I don't know too much about that card but I'm running the game on an intel integrated chipset. It's much better than mine so it should be ok. There are several threads regarding graphics cards in general and ATIs specifically, check those out to get specific info on your card. As far as ram, the more the better! This beast will use up whatever you throw at it. It really depends on how much you're willing to spend. I have 768mb and it runs okay but I've heard people with a over a gig having crashes and huge slowdown. The Harkonnen patch really cuts down on the HD swapping so try that and see how it does before buying more ram.

I will do! Thank so much, I really think the late-game lag has lots to do with it really slamming the swapfile. I had the exact same problem with Civ 3 as well.
