SoZ still needs Ivory to generate Ancient Cavalry after it is builded?

It was more entertainment than work, but thanx.
Anyway, the result was a bit disappointing, because in my current game I wanted to disconnect my biggest enemy from the only ivory thus preventing from completing the SoZ, but based on the results it is not possible.

Ancient Cavalry and Crusaders don't cost gold, right?

if you mean cost gold to support the AC or crusaders, yes! (of course whether you pay depends on your government type as well as the total units you have)

OK, thanks. I never build those wonders, and now I have even less reason to. I wouldn't like more and more gold support every 5 turns that you can't stop

I've read that SoZ is overpowered and underpriced. I'm going to start playing Conquests this weekend, what would be a fairer build price?

"The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was carved in the mid-5th century bc by the Greek sculptor Phidias. The colossal statue was the central feature of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, the Greek sanctuary where the Olympic Games were held. It was considered to be Phidias’s masterpiece. The seated figure of Zeus, king of the Greek gods, was 12 m (40 ft) in height and made of ivory and gold. An earthquake probably leveled the temple in the 6th century ad, and the statue was later taken to Constantinople, where a fire destroyed it.

In playing Conquests I've noticed that the Statue of Zeus is far too powerful and that the civ that gets it tends to become the strongest of the AI civs. So I'm going to make gold a strategic resource and require it for building the SoZ. If this is likely to have any side effects, someone tell me now.

Well gold would now be tradeable but have no benefit from being traded...

Unless you have ivory but no gold and want to build the SoZ. My point is to make it harder because currently the SoZ is much too easy for its power. The problem is, would the computer know how to handle this? Would it trade for gold if it wanted to build the SoZ, but not if it had already been built? Or would you be able to exploit the AI by selling it useless gold. I believe in the Fall of Rome scenario gold is a strategic resource needed to build a wonder.

Well if they don't need gold then I would hope that the AI wouldn't want to get any more gold so it wouldn't value gold highly. I guess you would only know for sure by testing it.

Which I will do next time I have access to the game. Has anyone ever managed to sell iron to an Industrial or Modern Age AI Civ?

Strategic resources are only worth something to the AI if it has a use for them. For example, in the epic game, oil is worthless to the AI after refining but it will pay alot for it after combustion. It works the other way as well. The AI knows if you need it or not.

Iron seems to be valued higher than any other resource by the AI. All you need to see this is a) try to buy it from the AI or b) find an AI with lots of gold/turn available w/o various resources and offering some to them.

Most of the answers to the technical questions about unit production from wonders could have been found by looking into the help file in the editor. It explains very clearly and concisely how the system works.

In that case, making gold a strategic resource required only to build the SoZ shouldn't cause any problems. Thank you.

Fortunately for us, Catt answered the question very clearly and concisely.
