Do you guys know any space exploration games? It seems all the games that have some sort of space theme fall short of my ideal game. Actually they're not even close. Here are qualities that would make a space game awesome:

1) You control a person, not a ship. This person has skills and equipment and stuff

2) You can actually walk around your own ship. Sit on your captain Kirk chair and command the ship

3) There are hundreds of worlds to explore, you can actually walk off the ship, maybe use vehicles on the surface. There are actually things to see and do on the planets

(I know up to now it may sound like Mass Effect but...)

4) It's an exploration focused game. I want a rather loose story line, open world. Mass Effect is thinly-veiled linear game. I still liked Mass Effect

5) It's not a strategy game. Galactic Civilizations is pretty good in that there are many types of worlds and stuff... Still.. You can't really explore them.

Well anyway... I'm just talking about my ideal game. Still, if you guys know some awesome games about space, share.

Wouldn't be awesome to have some sort of procedurally generated universe that is still pretty detailed, in some sort of online game, where you can buy a ship, build some sort of base/house on a planet of your liking, hehe. Um.. anyway.

Well, that rules out the X series. KoToR is similar, but linear like Mass Effect afaik. Freelancer is the closest game I know of, although the story is linear there are plenty of mods for it.

I don't think any of the Derek Smart games fit very well. ;)
