Greetings all,

Awhile back I saw/found a message or helpful hint someplace that listed the optimal amount of parts to win the space race and how many years it would take for the ship to reach AC. Was wondering if someone could provide me with the link or even just give me the breakdown of the best parts ratio to win on space race in the shortest amount of time.

Thanks in advance,

Beau

Yep, that was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

Also, another quick question: Are the game of the months for Civ2 downloadable anywhere? I know gotm16 and gotm15 you can still get the starting file to play them, but I'd like to give the others a shot?

Is it possible to score them myself just to see how I did compared to the others who played them?

Again thanks in advance,

Beau

Hm...well I wouldn't mind being a regular gotm player, however to be honest I'm at best a middle of the road civ player.::grin:: I mostly play total conquest, and as I've found out that seems to get pretty rough as you go higher on the difficulty levels. Which is one reason I was asking about the space race. Trying to broaden my stratedgy a bit I suppose.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Oh one more quick question: Do a lot of you put your cities on auto pilot? If so why, and when in the game do you do it?

Thanks in advance,

Beau

Oh, another thing, could you post a new link or tell me if that matrix excel file to score myself on the gotm's is located somewhere else? That link in your last post will never load up on my computer.

Thanks,

Beau

Are you not talking about Civ 3 here? I have never heard of an autopilot on Civ 2 unless you mean using Capitalisation to turn the city's shields into cash which stops you having to do anything else with the city.

It will. It doesn't tell you, but it is actually downloading the file right when you click on the link. It is rather large (~900k)and can take awhile depending on your connection speed.

I zipped it so its only (~250k) and put it here.

Either one should work.

Thanks for that zip file, that did the trick.

Now on to my next question::grin::....

It says to add it up manually so as to avoid the 'bonus' score. First - what is the 'bonus' score?
Second - if these are my numbers on screen what score would I enter into the score box of the excel sheet?

Year 2020
Roman Citizens (+36)
Peace (+3)
Barbarians (+25)
Total: 84
My percent was: 8%

Thats for gotm1. Pretty bad I know. That was my first emperor game ever. Quite frankly I was just thrilled to get out of it with 2 cities left intact::chuckle::

As a side question from that, is there any way to tell what level the game is set at from the saved gotm file besides loading up someone elses file and then immediately ending the game to get a glimpse of the difficulty level?

Thanks for all the help,

Beau

You have to take the sum of all points:

Score=Population points + Wonder points + Peace bonus + Barbarian bonus (or minus) + SS bonus
- Pollution

This is what you enter in the box.

Second, whenever you open a savegame it will pop up a box, saying Emperor (President, King ...) xxxx, Year yyyy. The box title will display the difficulty level! :yeah:
This should also be in the GOTM archive listing, but it´s not complete there!

And do start to play the CURRENT GOTM, we always welcome new players. You don´t have to be top player in order to take part, but you can become one!
:D

Um...probably a dumb question but what is "SS bonus"?

If you win the game by having your spaceship be the one that arrives first, you get points based on how large of a spaceship you sent. It can be up to 400 points.

The 'bonus score' is something the game adds on if you finish the game quickly. Look at one of the last two GOTM archives and find someone who ended their game very quickly. Finish their game and look at the score screen. At the bottom, it will have a 'bonus' score shown. For the GOTM score, you have to not count those points (which can only be done by adding up all the other pieces, as Lucky said).

Actually the score screen does ONLY show the BONUS score. There is NO summation of points, it does not matter how many points (if less than the bonus) you have, your final score will be ONLY the BONUS points. ;)
So you HAVE TO count the (real) points together manually!

Yes. I was trying to give some back ground as to how the bonus score affected the score that was shown. If I had an issue with how it was calculated, I would have addressed that. ;)

I've edited my post to make it clear that the method you gave is the only way it can be done, as to not cast doubt on you.

What have I done???
Angry because I tried to correct a false statement?

As I understood your post the score screen would look something like this:

pop
wonder
barb,poll,etc

BONUS

FINAL Score= normal score + BONUS!

And that is wrong.

The final score you get with an early conquest is ONLY the BONUS score, I think 1152 on Deity!?
Nothing is added to that. So you can also not subtract anything from it and get a normal score!

That´s what I read out of your original post. If I misunderstood you, sorry! :o

I just wanted to make it clear again, so there would be no further confusion.
I´m not trying to outsmart you, just wanting to help. If I angered you, SORRY again, don´t be mad at me! :yeah:

Hmmm.
:D

I can see how it could have been read that way, but that was not how it was intended.

No, I don't mind the point being clarified, but I think that if someone read it and looked at the game, it would be quite clear that it cannot be the way you read it.

And, if I was angry with you, you would not have to ask if I was. ;)

"And do start to play the CURRENT GOTM, we always welcome new players. You don´t have to be top player in order to take part, but you can become one! "

Lucky is right. I've only played the three recent GOTM & my GOTM score has improved each time. I've only played a handful of Emporer & Diety games to completion, but somehow I'm in the middle of the pack with the GOTM.

I don't think that the bonus you get was fully explained. True, you get the bonus for landing, and it can be up to 400 points, but the bonus is dependent on how many settlers you send. For each habitation module you have on your SS, you send 10,000 settlers and get 100 bonus points. The largest SS you can send has 4 of these modules and so you'll get 400 points but you may not want to send the maximum for whatever reason. While your SS is under construction you will get a note on the score screen telling you the potential bonus points you will get should your SS land in it's current condition. So if you've built 2 habitation modules but are still working on the structurals or whatever then the score screen will say: Spaceship: (200).
You also get 5 bonus points for any Future Techs that you may have researched! :goodjob: The way the research is worked out is bizarre for these techs but there is guidance in this forum. You will need the caravan delivery bonuses to get the higher FTs though. Good luck with the SS and building a big score! :D

Well ya had me fine up until here::grin:: What are the caravan delivery bonuses? Just for fun last night I started a OCC game, my first, on chieftan level. I thought it might help me to better learn to manage my science/research better and also work on my diplomatic skills. Its currently 1878ad and I have 14 future techs with 1 coming every 2 turns. Do I need to build a caravan for some reason?

Yet another question: Has someone ever plotted out the optimal route you'd need to get the techs needed for the space race? I know there's various things in there that will change from person to person, like what wonders they specifically like and such, just looking for a general route.

Again thanks in advance, lots of good information you guys have and its much appreciated.

Whenever you deliver a new caravan/truck to another city and open a new trade route (except food) you will get a message with something like this:
"xx Caravan from yy arrives at zz!
Revenues: aa"
The number of gold shown as revenues is th caravon delivery bonus.
You will get BOTH that amount of gold to your treasury AND the same amount of science beakers to you current research project! :yeah:
So building caravans is essential to complete the science tree as soon as possible and to get the higher Future Techs without having a huge science rate, too.
