I"ve been playing this game pretty much from when I bought it about 2 1/2 years ago with the space race victory turned off. I liked the animations but I thought it was a cheap way to win.

I started my last game with the space race turned on by accident. Now I'm in the early 1800's and I got one of those great games going BUT I just got notice that the Koreans on the other continent has started their space ship. I know that I can invade their capitol and the space ship gets destroyed, But that option is out of the question, they are just too big and I woulnd't be able to get a force big enough to take their capitol. I know if I can cut off their supply of uranium and/or aluminum they would be stopped from building it but they would probably just get that stuff from someone else.

Is it possible to nuke their capitol and destroy their space ship or is a ship like a wonder and you can't destroy it that way? Is there any other good ways to stop them from building their space ship or to destroy it?

Thanks!

To destroy it you have to take their capital. No other way. Try going to war with them and getting every civ with surplus aluminium or uranium to join you against them, and then go out of your way to pillage their aluminium sources. Then build your own spaceship..

You can also go Commie/Fascist and sabotage every attempt they make at building an SS part. :)

If you've got the option to nuke their capital, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to conquer it... you don't need to keep the city to destroy every ship part they have build so far, so just nuke the capital, rush in and raze it.

Yeah nuking the capitol would be the easiest but does anyone know for absolutely sure that will destroy it? I don't care if all the other civs go to war with me or not because there is only one civ on my continent that has any kind of military and I'm in the process of finishing him off too.

So does anyone know for sure if nuking the capitol will destroy the spaceship?

No, nuking the capitol will NOT destroy the spaceship. You must physically take that city.

If you're too far behind in tech to win a space race and need a longer war to capture the capitol, you might consider using the nukes to destroy the access to aluminum and uranium to buy you the time needed.

No I'm not behind in either the tech race or military, I just don't want anyone to win that way, not even me :) But you brought up a good point sewer, since I can't destroy it by nuking it I can nuke their Uranium and Aluminum!! Thanks Amigo!

This depends heavily on how many Civs are left, having 5+ nukes & knowing it's lost if you dont do something.

Make peace with the Civ you're taking out, you have bigger problems. Declare war on him, then immediatly get everyone else to join you. Nuke the capitol his other core cities, and MAKE SURE you use Control-M to nuke every uranium & aluminum he has. You can agree on trade embargoes with everyone against him(even if they make peace the embargoes will stay in place) and they'll likely pay you or sign embargoes for free against a common foe. You should also pull your units out of your big cities & especially any that are placed on resources so you don't lose half of them in case he retaliates(which he will), but you won't have to worry about anyone else firing back since they're at war with him too. Last mount up every single troop you can & start a blitzkreig over there, you have to get to his capitol before he can re-hook up the resources to make sure he doesn't get them.

Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

I just want to make the point that it might be dangerous to assume that his capitol is where he has built the Apollo Program - that is the city you have to take, and the AI often builds it in another city. You could use spies to investigate.

@dreamvirus
I think it's been established by someone that you destroy the AI spaceship if you take the AI capital regardless of where the Apollo Program has been built.
Don't have a link though.

Yep, take the capital.

If you've got enough nukes to hit resources then hit the big cities first to reduce the chance of retalliation. One ICBM may survive in a city, but that will be the only unit left!

One thing to consider is using a big SOD to approach the capital. If you have a defensive army or 2 to put into the stack then the AI may bypass it to attack other targets (put a few out there). You'll probably need air support.

How does your military compare in the F3 screen?

If his capital is near the coast (not neccessarily on it though), here's another thing you can try. I haven't actually personally tried it yet, but I think it could work:

Have your invasion fleet waiting off the coast of the enemy capital out of sight of his forces. Then nuke some random city of his, preferably extremely far away from his capital and near your border, in order to provoke retaliation and serve as a diversion by making him think an invasion is coming there. Then wait for retaliation. Assuming your fleet is out of sight of the coast, and no enemy ships happen upon it (which is a big 'if', if you don't know where the enemy fleet is), he won't be able to nuke your fleet in retaliation, because he won't know where it is. Then, on the following turn, open up with all your nukes on his capital and all spaces connecting his capital to his other cities so that reinforcements will not be able to arrive by next turn. Then move your fleet in and land your units within attacking range. Try to have some carriers nearby with fighter support to ward off any air bombardment. Then wait for the next turn and move your units into the capital, preferably with shore bombardment from battleships to soften things up.
