Spearman defeats Tank - a savegame!!!!!

There are many events which are unusual on paper, but when you look on the situation closely you see that it's actually very reasonible - for example, cavalry can defeat tanks, for example - if it's in the desert in WWII, and the tanks all got sandy and their engines aren't working properly, not a lot of ammunition to the tanks, not experienced crews, against elite raiding units, than it is quite clear who will win the fight.

True. Very true.

Of course, most of that analysis is after the fact. The general who committed the tanks probably couldn't have predicted the sand storm.

After the Spanish armada, we can say it was because of the greater maneuverability and more powerful cannon on the English ships, but before the combat, the expert consensus was that the Spanish would have an easy crossing of the English Channel.

After the battle of Isandlwana, everyone can blame mistakes made the commander in the field. Before hand, the general sends his troops in the field with every expectation of victory.

Rationalize all you want, but civ3 is still messed up. And boring. And the editor sucks.

But hey, if that's what you like in a game...

Are you talking about the Italians in Ethiopia (WWII)?

The Ethiopian Army in the 1930's was NOT armed with "spears" but with WW I era weapons.

The Ethiopian Army under the great king Menelek (a Christian) who destroyed a large Italian Army at Adowa in the 1890's also were NOT armed with "spears".

What IS true is that Civ III unit values are a crock.

That correct opinion is becoming more and more widespread.

And 1.17 made it worse.

Ahh... Zouave. Try playing Alpha Centauri for 2 months, and come back to Civ3; it'll really nail that feeling home. I'm beginning to think that Brian Reynolds was the real brains behind Civ2, not Sid... so we'll have to see how Rise of Nations is. It's an RTS, but hey, it'll probably be infinitely more playable than Civ3.

I wonder why no reviews (save 1 that I've seen) have compared Civ3 to Alpha Centauri? They all seem like they're reviewing the back of the box.

Here it finally is: a savegame that shows a Spearman defeating a tank!!!!!

It is a regular Spearman in a town w/o walls, fortified, terrain=grassland. The tank is veteran, both are unhurt. The Spearman will have one HP left after the fight and gets promoted (use the multi cheat to see that)!!!

It is the town Tanis (Egypt), on the northern tip of the eastern peninsular I`m busy taking. There`s two tanks straight south; use one to attack the town - and it will die!!!!!

I`m playing Monarch, unaltered Civ3mod except for color change for Rome.

Have fun!

edit: this is using 1.16!!!!!

Come on Killer; according to Indiana Jones the Egyptians :egypt: buried The Arc of the Covenant near the city of Tanis. Therefore the spearman did not melt the tank but the extra defensive bonus from The Arc of the Covenant caused this problem.

Just curious, how do you capture screenshots?

I use Paint Shop Pro. Set up capture. then go to CivIII via Alt+Tab, activate screencapture, mark the area you want and it gets importet into PSP, Then you can save it as whatever you wnat....

For the infight pic I used a 5-sec delay timer since I had to use keys to move the tank.

Hahahahahah it's called a miracle. It happens most often with the Spearman because most miracles occured during ancient times when God actually cared. hahahahahahah

Yes, it was a miracle, and the story will be told for generations.

The fact that Killer so far is the only one to present a saved game about this, despite the numerous reportings that it "happens all the time" shows that it is indeed a miracle. :)

I had a spearmen defeat a tank last night, but the tank only had one hit point to begin with.:p I was actually happy about, because now I can say I have seen it happen.;)

It doesn't count until you get a tank to lose to a spearman when it starts with full health (at least 3 bars)

McClelland assembled a Union army of 100,000 in Virginia, but his advance was stopped by logs painted black to resemble cannon. (In other words, it could have been worse.)

Yeah. I know, but for some demented reason I wanted to resurrect this thread.:crazyeyes

Once I had a veteren battleship with full hps lose when *attacking* a *2* defense ship, frigate and the battleship lost. I didn't take any pictures since it happened very soon after the game came out, also it probally isn't that hard for anyone to belive it ;) .

Hehe not too bad though, kind of funny even :).
