Spearman vs. Tank

Not an exagerration - that was when i started playing (and had a tendancy to cheat) and i atttacked as my Praetorean and lost - i took it a little rashly and swore very loudly at the game (seeing as how i was playing against Ghandi on Settler)!

^^Yeah, but praets vs. spearman or archers and TANKS vs. spearman or archers (or even longbowmen for that matter) are a completely different animal.

What? Praets and Spearman, Archers or Longbowmen are all human categories.

^^My bad, the bulk of the thread was about rediculous losses of modern units vs. much older units. I see ur previous post about praets. But...

Think you mean Goliath and most timea i use powerful offensive units, i get beat by primitive ones.
Let's talk macemen, then. It's still an incredible exageration to say you lose most battles against an archer/spearman.

If you are consistently losing high tech units to low tech units you are doing something wrong. Generally that means attacking with badly injured units or in bad situations (fully fortified, across a river on a forested hill being a good example of the later). The spearman defeating tank scenario has essentially been eliminated from Civ 4 if you know what you are doing.

Don't you just hate it when the enemie's primitive unit defeats a more modern unit. Well w/ all the threads on this subject, I found that the most real life explination is that some how the the primitive unit got modern weapons such as RPG.Well after some thinking I came up w/ this,
rather than having units remain the same all through the game, what if they Auto Upgraded. This "Auto Upgrade" would have to be slow, what I was thinking is that like they remain a full era behind. I think this system would reduce the chance of a spearman defeating a tank, by remove spearmen from the game once all civs reach the Medivel Era.

What are your thoughts & ideas.
I have not posted this idea in the Creation & Custimization yet, I would like it to have you help me find flaws, make changes, & basicaly perfect it first.
I would like to see what you guys think of that idea. Vary interesting discusion.

A single spearman, especially a short thin one, deserves at least a draw because in a city he can hide in places the tank cannot go after him :scan:

Of course, we don't expect tank crew getting out of the tank armed with handguns, do we ?

No no no... they don't get out, ie. Spearman fidgeting with the hatch trying to figure out how to open it- crew commander can hear him banging away- Said commander spins the turret with surprising amount of velocity- Spearman slings off into the bushes where he crept from, breaking 4 ribs and his pelvis along the way.... or if thats not accurate enough

Spearman does NOT sling to bushes- Keeps working on hatch even though gasoline has splashed all over himself by now and spear is stuck into nearby tree- Same commander gets on radio and calls Bradley fighting vehicle- Mr.Bradley rolls up behind and peppers tank with .50cal- Banging noises cease on top of tank- Happy tank commander owes Mr. Bradley a cold beer after the patrol is over-

Cool story IMHO!

Many bushes in a city.

Oh I don't know how it is in Sweden, but Houston is very green. Trees, bushes, pastures, etc... All over the place. In the springtime, the bluebonnets come up along with other wild flowers. Its very colorfull.
Well now, downtown Houston is pretty barren of such "cover". On occasion, I restore old "antique" buildings in the downtown area. I HATE going down there. It is crawling with Spearmen. If youre not carefull, theyll chuck their spear at you and take your wallet. ;)

You've got bushes, you've got spearmen... Everyone is warned then, the message is clear, never attack Houston with tanks!

racist :goodjob:

No. Not racist. Just cutting up a little. Reckon I don't need to do that. Wont happen again.
There ARE more bushes downtown than there are spearmen.... Havent seen a tank in the area for a long time.

I'll remember not to attack Houston. I'm likly to use 10 or 12 Modern Armor! :(
With my luck that's deffinate.

P.S
Watch out for Paris France I heard they have the most trees/bushes of all cities in the world. Now don't call me a racist!

:spear:

This thread is kind of reminding me of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. The Ewoks, armed with sticks and stones, managed to destroy serveral modern Mech Infantries. They also fought against a legion of Imperial Stormtroopers ...and won in the end.;)
