I checked, and I don't think this has ever been brought up (OK, check the list and see, wiseguy), but what's your favourite special resource. And then I mean *all time favourite*. I understand that some resources are good when starting a city and some are good, because they generate a lot of just one resource type, but which one do you like best.
My personal all time favourite is the oasis. It may not be much when you start your little city near it, but later on it will produce a lot of food, especially when irrigated and it will receive trade income form (rail)roads. If you need shields you can choose to mine the square for an increase in shieldproduction.

I realize that whales are probably the favorite in the very beginning with it providing food, shields and trade. However, overall I think my favorite would actually be coal. Mined with a railroad through it and it provides a ton of production. I think that you could put an airbase on it as well and it will also provide some extra food and trade, but I've yet to try that.

Does anyone have a vote for LEAST favorite as well?

Well, there's no perfect special resources, it depends on the situation but when you start a game, I think it'd be wiser to be in a plain with buffalo. So you can have food for growth AND extra resources shield for fast building.
When you're quite developped, I'm trying to access gold or coal hills of course. I think these are the main parameters of the game (gold for trade, coal for resource...) But it'd be a bad idea to be surrounded by only hills

for your city won't be able to growth without food.

That's a tough question that I really have to break down to answer.

Best production resource: Coal (maybe iron)
Best food resource: Wheat/Corn
Best trade resource: grapes
Best all around: Buffalo

Worst resource: Bananas {four food without the chance to irrigate or boost production.)

Whales
Silk
Wine
Gold
I don't really like the food specials, unless the land just sucks in total.

And I build on rivers if possible, forest if not.

One way to "boost" production with fruit (bananas) is build a city right on top of it and then build a supermarket to add two more food. Otherwise, mine that fruit and turn into Silk!

As for favorites, what about Wine with Mining/Road/Rail? Doesn't have the food benefit of Whales, but it's got solid production and solid trade.

My favorite is the Whale, sea access, plus a whale- ahh, I get shivers

Who am I to judge and strike you down? But you're Pushing and shoving me. You minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way. There's no love in fear, but i'd have it no other way -Tool

Right, Smash. In fact a river is a good idea, since you can build hoover dam for extra shields.
But I keep on saying gold is best for trades. Especially with democracy (the only one I accept. Never monarchy or communism or anything else)

I find the whale best. It gives your city a good start with food, shields and gold.

Pheasant is second in my list.

Food: Oasis on a river, mined, airfield, rail.

Production: Coal on a river, mined, airfield, rail.

In the beginning, whales give you a big boost, but later all the other tiles catch up. I wonder what would happen if there were a river on the whale and you mined, railed, and airfielded it....

Does airfield increase shields or gold? I thought it is only a landing place for bombers and fighters.

Of course not. At least that's the way it is in the real life... How can an airfield increase money?

On the other hand, if in Civ 3 there was a new city improvement called Civ addicted forum, that surely would decrease shield and therefore gold (ie productivity and benefits) by at least 300%

Right guys? I still wonder why I'm wasting my work time on this forum. Or why I can stop going on it

I Love coal the most!
it can support a lot of units and you're production shoots up! Give me Coal!

COMPROMISES EVERYWHERE! !eek! Did anyone read my post?

I said: which special resource do you like best. I.e.: if the game had only 1 (one, een, uno, ein) special resource, which one would you prefer?
I doubt if this would be coal, as it generates a lot of shields, but foodproduction in these squares suck!
I still think the oasis rocks. Wouldn't mind if the whole world were a big desert: oasis would save me.

So today was gonna be the day but you'll never throw it back to me! By now you should've somehow realize what you've got to choose. I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do, about that special resource.

No, airfields act as railroad + farmland. If you had a hill, you would have to choose between mining and irrigation. Using this method, you can have both. Great deal, huh?

ze whale.
ze best.
