Speed up my game

Hi.
After a few multiplayer games, I found I played particularly slow in the multiplayer world. People frequently hurry me up. However I have already tried my best. I keep busying myself with all my affairs.
Eg order my workers (to build roads and develop terrains) and settlers, my armies (to guard and epxlore), assign my citizens to work on different terrains, set back my science slider (when 1 turn left before the tech researched), and so on...

Even if I am playing at a slow speed, I am so busy and I have no time to think my plans long, doing diplomacy etc. I am more and more busy as my empire expands. I usually spend about 75-90% of my time bar before I can finsih most of my work. And people keep hurrying me up.

I feel I am reduced to fast-clicks, rush plans, and restless work. So exhausted...

What's wrong with me? Why other people can play so fast, while I play so slow? Is it my problem? Or is it because they simply skip most of non-important work (eg no micromanagement, automate their units instead)?Otherwise it is hard for me to believer they can finish their tasks in less than 25% of time bar.

How to speed up my work in multiplayer games?

Not familiar with multiplayer ... sloooooow dial up connection .... However ... Sounds like your game-play is more suited to pbem ... Why not join a game

Yes, probably.
I start to guess they simply automate work and/or skip micromanagement to speed up their game. As they urge me up, I have to skip some of my minor work too.
It is easier for me to become a common enemy in the game since the game will speed up if I am got rid of.

As to PBEM, I don't know if I am suitable because I don't have stable timetables. And I may not be able to be committed for long games because sometimes I may need to go overseas for, say, a few months (so I cannot play Civ3).

Some suggestions:

  1. automate workers
  2. give units send to orders
  3. if you get a moment check cities and shift-click "schedule" city improvements
  4. Put as many units on sentry / fortify as you can
  5. Put preferences to build last unit.
  6. Concentrate on critical areas for manual moves.
  7. Check advisors frequently for the overall view
