Splitting a civ in two

Is it possible to split a civ into two seperate civs? In other words, if an enemy of mine has about 20 or so cities and if I then take their capital city, is there a possibility that half of his cities will join a newly created civ? I thought I remembered reading that this can be down. What is the probability that it will happen?

Maybe it was in civ2, I can't remember.

Thanks for the help.

No, this is not included in Civ3.But AFAIK since Conquests capturing the capital makes it more likely that single cities culture flip to your civ.

Yes, this was in Civ II, or at least in Civ I i'm not totally sure in which of those. But it definately was in one of those, and i liked this feature. Hope it will be there in Civ IV. :)

really civ1 and not civ2? I never had the opportunity to play civ1 but I seem to remember it in civ2. I guess I could've just read about it.

I wish they had this in civ3.

No, it was only in Civ1.

At least, I saw it severall times in Civ1 and never in Civ2, and I must have played about 1,000 entire games of each.
It would be nice if it was reactivated in Civ3. After all, I see more point in that than in the ability of eliminated Civs to come back from ashes.

I used to do it all the time in Civ2, so I know for a fact it was in there. But then, it's been so long since I've played Civ1 and gotten to that point that I don't remember if it's there or not.

I would suggest that since there's threads in both forums about it, it was probably in both Civ1 & 2.

I find it extremely unlikely that Civ2 contains any feature I never encountered. As unlikely as, say, Pete Sampras learning about a kind of volley he never used in his career.
Unless this feature was only reintroduced in Conflicts, Test of Time or another Civ2 add-on. At least, I'm sure it was not in "vanilla" Civ2. Or if it was, it was strangely implemented to never happen to me in about 1,000 games...
Hope I don't sound ***too*** smug...

no offense morch,

But I do trust what Turner says. Not that I don't trust you saying it never happened to you. That I am sure is true, but it doesn't mean it could never happen. Turner is a reliable source of info here on the boards from what I've seen.

I had Civ2 MultiPlayerGold edition.

I had Civ II vanilla and it happened to me quite a few times.

Although I liked the feature, I did find it kinda strange to see the Russians split off from the Aztecs, or the Romans from the Zulu. (The program just picked a name from the tribes that weren't used in that particular game.)

The civil war idea is good, but the naming system should be revised. I think the new tribe should be named after the biggest rebel city. So if I capture the Roman capital, and some rebel cities split off and Antioch happens to be the biggest of them, there should be two tribes now: the Romans and the Antiochians. My 2 cts.

Well said Frollo. That'd be a great idea for civ4.

I believe that it would be difficult to impliment into Civ4 if they decide to keep the civ-specific abilities (which, no doubt they will).

True, but maybe they could impliment something that turns the civ specific units into just slave workers for the civ that splits away from the main civ empire.

morchuflex, you have to have an open slot (color) in the game to have the split work in Civ2. So if you start the game with 7 civs, you can't get the split to work. If you wipe out one, then you have a chance of splitting a remaining civ.

That would explain why I never saw it: I always played against max opponents and my style of play was pacific.
But shouldn't I have seen that happening from AI / AI wars?
