*Spoiler4* - Gotm20-Spain - End Game Submitted

Well i lost again.I took to long to put the second settler down and lost that advantage. Then i forgot to research pottery and build granaries for a while.I was always behind on tech i haven't got this tech race thing down yet the computer always quits trading with me even for gpt.I had a couple of firsts though.I destroyed 2 civs of course this was after the Zulu had been at them for a while.I got to build cavalry i got more tech than i had on my firt 2 gotms.game score 1988 jason score 926 both of these are double any of my other scores yay.maybe this will help my 469 gpr

oh and i never had a golden age or a great leader

Reading the last couple of posts brought 2 good points to my attention and I wanted to share them, even though I am surely not the first or only one to think of them.

I totally agree! However, I think that even more credit is due to Cracker and the Gotm staff for giving us a map where they were sure that we would be sending galleys in search of the new world, and therefore able to dominate the trading arena at least until the discovery of Navigation!!:worship: :worship: :worship:

From what I have read alot of people have had problems with the Zulu, they went the way of the dodo quickly.

I'm wondering what is the level of connection between the strength of the Zulu (who obviously started with some bonus settlers at least) and how people dealt with them? Some people (like myself) saw them getting powerfull and spent most of the game befriending them to avoid getting eaten alive, and others immediately jumped into continent wide alliances against them. If I had had the foresight and resources to tag team them, would they have joined the dodo in my game too? I didn't think that Spain and any would-be allies would have stood much of a chance against them in my game.

Open 1.29f

Well, in my game, the Zulu were the first to go. This led to Ottoman domination until about 1435.

I was humming and hahing, waiting for FIssion to roll around (I had stashed a great leader for the job of United Nations) when I noticed that maybe a dozen Ottoman bombers where caning the Indians from an invadable city.

It was just too good an opportunity. I used maybe half a dozen tanks and took out nearly their entire Air Force! Woohoo!

Rest of my tanks and a stack of cavalry (including 2 armies) went to deal with the Sipahi horde that I had isolated to the NW of the continent.

After that, a quick raid on Iznik (Osman wanted the UN too) plus a hefty stack of Otto infantry - maybe 30 units, wiped in 1 turn. They were retreating off my turf but I didn't fancy letting them get to a city.

So, 1480AD diplo win, 6759 Firaxis and 7095 Jason, vote was 5:1. On Deity level that's very good for me. I daresay plenty of people will beat it.

Had Osman not been at war with the Indians and Japanese, I'm pretty sure my game would have been a very quick defeat.

EDIT: Cracker's questions answered.

1) Try to step back and view the big picture of the game and tell us how you "felt" while playing in each of the 3 or four ages of your game.

Well, the ancient age was a real grind. I was always behind in tech, and only got one trade for pottery. That was crucial in getting the settler factory going - but in a way, my lower than optimal expansion paid off against the Sipahi.
The MA-Industrial era was just a blur to capture the Great Library and get back into the tech race. It took a long time to build the factories, but having the Golden Age going at the same time helped. I found the latter part with a large Ottoman army camped on my start turf very nerve wracking.
The Modern Age finished just after it had begun.

2) If you played in Gotm18-Celts as well, how did the layout of that map influence your play in this game as you began to reveal what your continent looked like?

A LOT. If I had gone for through the Jungle looking for the French I would have got Masonry rather than Pottery and my start would have been even slower.
One other similarity was the start area's less than perfect production ability (not a lot of hills and mountains). It just encouraged me to jump the Palace quickly.

3) Deity level games can be highly dependent on the outcomes of early Random Number Generator (RNG) events. Try to look back at your game compared to other games you have seen reported and pick out two or three significant differences where you think the RNG impact may have helped (or hurt) to shape your game.

One VERY big item was the Sipahi army. It tried to go through my defenders and got greased by a lone Infantry. If it had broken through - shudder. Maybe 5 cities lost at once?

Another lucky break I had was with an Army of mine attacking the huge infantry stack (30+ units). Reduced to 1 HP... that was close.

But without a doubt, biggest RNG factor was the location of the Great Library. If it had been built on the other continent, I would have been a backward part of another Civ. Reason? The Keltoi had the only rubber resource handy... so by going for the Great Library, I got the tech AND the the resource to build the tanks and infantry.

4) Having played this game, do you feel that the UU of the Conquistador is implemented to provide a balanced and exciting UU play opportunity with the Spanish civ?

It's underpowered, but the timing is very nice. If you delay using it a few turns you get those factories up and running very quickly. Still prefer F15 (latest and greatest GA) but I don't knock the Spanish UU (Missionary in 1.29f, Conquistador in PTW).

We hope that all players have enjoyed this game and that you are looking forward to Gotm21 "Across the Med"!!

You bet your buns I'm looking forward to it. Love naval action.

I'm starting to belive this had some sort of a random factor to it. Some event in a war went one way or the other leading to the downfall or rise of the Zulu. In my game the Zulu was pounded into the ground by a joint Indian/Ottoman war machine. I didn't even get to know the Zulus for very long before they where gone. Then India and the Otto's ruled our piece of land for a while. But then they decided the island wasn't big enough for the both of them and the war was on that more or less lasted on and off until the end of the game. No one strong enough to wipe the other out but still strong enough to keep some level of restistance so not to be wiped out themselves.

Keltoi did ok but they where small, the english was pushed into the sea and I had taken care of frenchy.

On the other side of the world America took care of business and got rid of the others one by one (iroq first, then aztec and in the process of dealing with the japanse when the game ended).

Zulu's were the first to go in my game..

Basically an alliance by everyone on my continent (except me) against them brought about their quick demise...

!!!!!!

Just a question, about a diplomatic victory here...

Ok 6 turn before I complete the UN (no prebuild) my opposition for the UN vote, the ottomans, declare war on me breaking a ROP agreement... I knew I had the votes even before this. So was this a pre-emptive strike by the AI in a desperate last bid attempt to avoid defeat??

In the end this war cost me around 300 points probably more as I was a democracy who had only been involved in one war and avoided the constant conflict on my continent.. Still my best finish date and score to date though with a diplomatic finish in 1730 with around 5600 jason points

Having settlers ready still enabled me to take control over the lands of the celts, english and indians, so it is very possible to expand your lands without military conflict...

Interesting... In my game the Ottomans attacked me on my last turn of research for Fission, also breaking an ROP. They weren't my opposition though, America was, so I don't know if you can draw any conclusions from that. Fortunately for me I had a palace prebuild going, and got the UN right when I discovered Fission.

My GA ended while I was researching Fission, which added an extra turn to my research, but I got the UN and won the vote 7-1-3 (yes, ALL the civs were still alive in my game at the end, although Aztecs only had 1 city) in 1220AD, for an ingame score of 7457 and Jason score of 8484.

In the early stages of the game I was sweating the deity level, since I lost the last deity GOTM. But as time wore on I saw how much free land there was and started to calm down. It also became clear as I saw more and more of the world that some early wars and bad starting positions were going to let me claim MUCH more land than I expected. After that I felt my chances were pretty good. Some really good trade deals made all the difference for me; the biggest being when I micromanaged half my empire to buy Map Making from India when they were the only civ that had it. This caught me up and I stayed near or in the lead from then on as far as tech goes. It began to be like any other game then.

As for the conquistador, I didn't find it useful at all until about 25 turns from the end of the game. I had been resigned to the fact that I wouldn't be getting a golden age when the Zulu sneak attacked me near the end of the Industrial age. I was able to beat down a cavalry to 1 health and the kill it with a conquistador to start a late game GA which bumped up my research speed and probably shaved a few years off my end date. I then used a few more to cut off all the resources the Zulu had. This along with continent wide alliances rendered the Zulu harmless pretty quickly. If they hadn't attacked me, however, I would not have used them at all.

This list is split by class, and includes whatever info I could garner from the spoiler posts 2,3 and 4. It is meant as a quick reference to what has been posted for endgame. Note that these are not necessarily in order. Lines with a Jason score are listed first. If you'd like to fill in the blanks feel free to post to this thread or PM me.

[ptw] 1.21f Open Class

Not much left to report for my game. As I entered the Modern Age, I was the tech coleader with the Zulu, who owned around 2/3 of the continent. I had my palace prebuild going along nicely as my research on Fission was complete. When I switched it over, I had around 6 turns left to build. At this point, science was irreleveant to me, so I cranked up my taxes, and began bringing in around 700gpt, gifting nearly all of it out every turn to my 'friends' whose assistance I would require. In 1505 AD the UN was built, and this is how it went.

Isabella: Isabella
Shaka: Shaka
Elizebeth: Isabella
Ghandi: Isabella
Lincoln: Isabella
Tokugawa: Isabella
Hiawatha: Hiawatha

So, I ended winning with a 5:1:1 vote in my favor. I had a vote to spare, but I'm still glad I used extraordinary means to keep Japan and India alive for the vote. If both of them had gone, I would have been much less sure of my chances to win. All in all I think this was my best GOTM to date. I scored 6059 Firaxis points and a Jason score of 6662.

Thanks are due out to all of the GOTM staff involved in this great game and the mysterious Mediterranean Melee next month.

PTW v1.14 Open class

Well, let's try some history:

Regent - GOTM17 - Lost
Monarch - GOTM18 - Lost
Emporer - GOTM19 - Lost
Diety - GOTM20 - VICTORY

Even though it took awhile, 1830 - Space Race (5995 score), I beat out India by 2 components to the launch. Which made me very happy and relieved to finally win and on a higher level.

Yes, I know I had no barbarians to deal with and had the New World to use as barganing chips, but I will still take this win with all the glory it can besiege upon me. I've finally maxed out the scoring indicator on my home machine and hit the ball to the top !!!

I built the TOE, Hoover, UN, SETI and the Internet to boost my research (which helped).

The main competing civs were India - #1 in tech (behind me in the end , of course:lol: ), Zulu, with their 7 cities to my one at the beginning and Japan, just a few tech behind, but never got the opportunity to build any space ship parts. The only other surviving civs were England and the Celts, both still trying to make the Modern Era.

I took 3 UN votes and it was between me and Japan (which I wondered who it would be, becasue Zulus and India were all pretty close to them). All votes were 1 vote me, 1 vote Japan - as we each voted for ourseleves and everyone else kept abstaining. I guess what I needed to do was keep the Americans and Ottomans, and Iroquis alive for thier votes, but they were all exterminated as I was researching for the UN.

Well, as far as the UU, I didn't care for them or use them. Actually I forgot them as well as my GA. When I built the Internet, my GA started, and I was like "Oh yeah, my GA, I forgot about that", but it helped jump me up right as I was gunning for the final few spaceship techs. The UU I want to really use and play is the Vikings. I've never played them, but if forced to, I think it would be great.

I probably could have researched faster if it were not for my army of 270 units including 50+ MA, 75+MI, 50+ Art, with other assorted units including ICBMs ready to go. They never fired a shot. This did slow things, but I know it also prevented Zulu and Japan, who were Furious with me most of the time, from dare declaring war. Instead, they kept wanting to make trades, so I obliged them.

As far as this game goes, I loved it, as I did all the games. Cracker and his team really put alot of thought and time into making these events fun and exciting for us, so I will continue to enjoy them. Now I can finally go to the Pre-Greece thread. Wheww....... this one took alot out of me.:crazyeye:

@ Xevious

Yep open class for me...

nice table as well, looks like I will be finishing middle of the road again...

All in all very happy to be improving my score every GOTM.. Next step for me is to really work on my tec trading instead of just going 100% taxes and buying everything

Thanks to all the GOTM team for making another great GOTM.. It was the little things that gave it a great feel. liked the naming of differnt regions, great touch.

PTW 1.21 - Open Class

I want to apologize for not chatting much lately. Too much work and no time to play.:( Anyway, I really want to finish this month game because I want to see if trading alone (with the 40 turns reasearch - no Great Library exploit - no beating up AIs for techs - no I luring AI to declare war so that I don't have to pay them GPT exploit - you know what I mean;)) can keep up with the AI technology. To finish this game, I have to play a lot of small sessions. Since I didn't really want to set off any low turn per session, I left Civ3 running most of the time. Please keep in mind that I didn't spend over 159 hours on this game; the actual play time may be around 50 hours.

The attached file at that post below is the complete history of all trading and doing business with the AIs in my game as I have promised in my other "trading" thread. Toward the beginning of the industrial age, there weren't much trading opportunity for me becuase no one had any money to buy anything from me.:( Of course, it doesn't really matter much at this point because my civ is usually strong enough to take over the world or to take over the tech lead with the Theory of Evolution sling shot.

PS: Won by Domination in 1070ad with just a little bit better than 10K on the Jason scoring system.:) The mini-map of my end game can be found here.

It is very tricky to eyeball this. I'd venture a wild guess that you are around 100 tiles from domination.

The Mapstat utility, available in this thread can tell you exactly how close you were.

Dianthus, what a way to win your first GOTM! It seems that you did it without a GA. Did you forget to trigger one?

Thanks Txurce. You're right about the GA, I didn't get one. Normally GA is just something that happens naturally, I don't really think about it. I didn't both building the Conquistador as initially I was trying for a peaceful Diplomatic win, so triggering a GA by winning a battle with my UU was out. Later in the game it just didn't seem worth using the Conquistador against the far superior AI units. Does pillaging count as a battle win, or does it have to be a real battle?

The other way to get a GA (I believe) is to build a wonder applicable to each trait (in this case Religious/Commercial). I didn't even bother trying to build wonders earlier on. I managed to build 2, Leonardos and Shakespeares (trying for Smiths, but switched when Japan built it 2 turns earler) later. I didn't consider GA when choosing which wonders to go for, maybe this was a mistake!

Moonsinger, once again a dominating performance. I still don't know how you do it, even though I read your trading thread for GOTM20. I don't know how you can even track and write all that down every turn or so. Simply amazing.

SirPleb, thanks for that link to Mapstat. I've seen many people talking about how many tiles they were away from domination and who would be in the UN vote, etc. I've actaully loaded it and now and used it, after I finished the game though. But it did clearly show me who my UN vote would be against, where it was hard just looking the map. I was worried how to run it and how to load it, but it was very simple. I may now be brave enough to look at some other utilities. Oh, and great win on the Predator class game. Did anyone else play that version?

ptw 1.14 open

Given the very generous start position this game was remarkably doable on deity, and the fact that I won proves this. I had a slowish start as always as I was afraid to attack too soon. I took out the French by about 600ad (pyramids) with knights. The Zulus were very big and I had every one else at war with them which only appeared to strengthen them. I eventually attacked the Celts and English with cavalry, which was a bit tame of me as the Celts never had iron. I was too afraid of the Zulu attacking me in the South to attack the Celts sooner.

Trading kept me well up in tech until the Industrial age when I started falling badly behind, especially when the Aztecs beat me ( very easily) to TOE. Clearly world war to induce Communism in the AI was needed. Therefore I refused tribute to the Zulu in one sleep deprived moment when my recent Celtic acquisitions were almost undefended and crawling with workers who were completing railroads. The Zulus attacked me and immediately overran several cities and captured about 60 workers. I narrowly held on with the help of a massive draft. A few turns later I got replaceable parts only to find that rubber was just out of reach. I did manage to trade for some though and then counterattacked the Zulu. I managed to drag everyone into a war which lasted pretty much for the rest of the game, and soon they were all communists.

The rest of the game was fairly easy. The Aztecs went into a massive tech lead but lost the war on the other continent. I found that although no one would trade me anything it was pretty easy to steal techs. I have never tried this before and it is a bit galling when you blow 3500g on an unsucessful attempt but it beats research and buying techs at 7000g.

I played for spaceship win for the first time, but now I see the the jason score is unfavorable for this. I wish I had gone for conquest instead, as this would have been fairly easy at the end with my massive army. Frankly it seemed like too much work and was pleased just to win. (1886ad firaxis score 10226; jason score 6139 I think).

Superb effort as usual by Moonsinger and all those other who beat my score as usual. I'm just pleased to beat the AI.

:goodjob:

Conquest level - PTW 1.21

Here is a link to my industrial ages post:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?postid=1049126#post1049126

Going into the modern ages, I was well behind in tech., but had managed to start a world war, forcing most of the other civs into Communism or Monarchy. Japan built the United Nations while I was still in the Industrial Ages, but never called for a vote. As I entered the modern ages, I wondered if the Space Victory might be attainable.

I planted spies in all the other Civs and found out that no one had yet moved forward with the spaceship. I attribute this to the other civs being in a state of war. However, as I started to work on researching Space Flight, the French started building their spaceship. I was able to build my Apollo Program, but it was apparent that I would be too far behind the French to win.

Knowing Japan was the tech. leader and knowing I had around 4000 gold, I attempted to steal a tech. from the Japanese, and it worked! I then noticed that if I set my research to 0, I was gaining around 1354 GPT and could feasibly steal a tech. every 3 turns rather than research a tech. every 10-12 turns. So, I stole a second tech. from the Japanese. By this time, I was getting fairly close to the French in the space race, but they had Laser, which I needed to try to build the last space parts. France had already built 8 spaceship parts and was working on the last two. Since I had already stolen two technologies from the Japanese, I decided to steal The Laser from the French. Disaster struck as my spy was captured and the French (who were far more powerful than me in my game) declared war on me

I immediately paid the Celts and the English anything they wanted to declare war on the French, and then worked on re-building my treasury for another attempt at stealing The Laser. I lost 2 cities in 1 turn to the French and their Modern Armor, and started upgrading anything I could to Mech. Infantry to try to withstand the attack (I had built Sun Tzu's Art of War earlier). I put up a battle but lost a third city about the time I successfully stole The Laser from the Japanese. After stealing The Laser, I spent all available gold on upgrading, rushing and drafting units to survive the 4 turns until I built S.S. Exterior Casing.

I then proceeded to lose another two cities and Barcelona was almost captured  But I knew that nothing else mattered if I could just build S.S. Exterior Casing in Toledo and hold onto Madrid!

Finally, I received some timely help from the Celts, who used an army of Modern Armor to weaken one of the cities the French had taken. I then used an elite Modern Armor to re-take the city and had a great leader emerge :D I immediately used the great leader to rush the last spaceship part and won the game :D - my first GOTM win and my first win period on any level above Regent. Japan and the Iroquos also were working on their last two parts, and I the French were also before I lost my spy.

This turn of events raised a couple of questions regarding stealing technology:

1. Is it easier to steal technology from a civ based upon the type of government they are in? My attempts to steal technology from the Japanese (Monarchy) worked every time, but my attempt to steal technology from the French (Communism) backfired completely.

2. Is stealing technology rather than researching technology considered an exploit of some type? It seemed that I would have been able to start earlier and steal technologies on a regular basis from the Japanese.

In response to Cracker's questions:

1) Regarding how I felt during the ages:

Ancient age: I felt very good about having the Conquest level bonuses to start with and was able to stay close in tech. I loved the starting location, with lots of reources and room to expand.

Middle age: I felt good going in, but felt somewhat down going out of the Middle Ages as my plans for world conquest went terribly awry. At the end of the Middle Ages, I felt like I had no chance to win.

Industrial age: I started to become more optimistic, figured out how to trigger a late Golden Age, and start to wonder if I could win.

Modern age: I felt very nervous and excitied, as I can actually see how a win might be possible, and in fact happened.

2) NA - did not play GOTM 18.

3) The Zulu were very strong at the beginning of the game. Had they not been taken about by an alliance of several other civs, the game could have been much different.

4) Outside of starting a timely late Golden Age for me, I did not find the Conquistador to be a very useful UU.

I did learn overall from this game to not give up on a game too early, because you never know what might happen if you don't give up. Thanks for the Conquest level game that encouraged me to give this deity level game a try.

Trajam, that's a real nail-biter of a finish. I'm amazed that someone who has never won on monarch could pull off a deity win - congratulations. Just as important is not giving up on a game, since there's just about always a way to possibly beat the AI. To paraphrase some coach: you don't lose, you just run out of time.

In reply to your questions, stealing technology is not an exploit. Communism may well be tougher regading espionage activities, but this could be a vestigial memory from Civ2.

This being my first Gotm I didn't keep very good notes but will note that I lost in a space race victory to the French. I was very frendly with the French all through the game after a very early war with them. The Zulu were the powerhouse in the game and I just kept paying them tribute when they asked.

The first civ to be eliminated was the Ottomans to the Zulu. I can't remember all the wars but I tried to stay out of them and just survive. I was behind in techs all game and my 6 suicide galleys all sank on their first turn in deep water so I gave up on that.

The Americans were eliminated on the other continent after the Ottomans. The 2 strongest civs at the first UN vote were the Zulu and the Iroquois.

I finally got into the game as the Zulu were destroying the Celts and leaving large blocks of territory unclaimed. I helped the French eliminate the English and thought I might have a chance to win without knowing just how far I was behind in techs until I saw modern tanks rolling through France.

After I submitted my official game I tried about a dozen new starts with Gotm20 before I thought I had one I could win on. Needless to say even in that game I cheated if I forgot to do something before I hit the turn button.

I learned from all the previous starts that early on you pay tribute to anyone stronger who asks. Even that didn't keep me from being attacked by the Zulu. Lucky for me my first suicide galley made it across and I made contact with the Japanese. I thought I could make contact with all the other civs but a squid ate my galley.

I closely watched all the civs to be able to sell contacts for gold and tech before navigation allowed contact to be made by another civ. That didn't work because somebody made contact without it. No problem since everyone says that can't happen I just reloaded the last turn and proceeded to get tech parity and plenty of gold. Unfortunatly when the Zulu attacked I had to use most of the gold to pursuade all the other civs to fight the Zulu. Even that almost didn't work as they couldn't get to me but they sure beat up the other guys.

Having them fighting amongst themselves allowed me to squeeze in the holes again. Finally as my holdings grew and my military strength grew I joind the Ottomans in eliminating the Zulu and grabing all their territory.

In the end it was me and the Americans as the leaders with the Ottomans neck and neck with me in tech. I won this game as a spacerace victory just ahead of the Ottomans. I thought I would have to attack their capital to stop their spaceship but they went communist which slowed their research and I was 1 tech ahead. The Ottoman attacked me just before the end but it wasn't an issue.

I'm still not sure I can win a deity game without cheating. I'm trying Gotm19 honestly and holding my own but I really hate small maps. I also can't play more than 20 turns in a row after 10AD because the pressure gets to me and I just need a break. It also gives me a chance to think about my strategy.

The whole experience has been very rewarding BTW thanks to Cracker and the whole Gotm staff.
