I can't get my spy to anything besides investigate. I wanted to bribe some generals but it won't come up with any option.

Is their a particular screen for the option?
I have loads of gold so that can't be a problem.

You can only bribe generals with Diplomats.

What benefits are their for having a spy?

Sometimes I stick a spy in important general's stacks so they can help foil assassinatino attempts and they have a good line of sight, also then they are avaliable if I need a spare spy. I also put priests with my gens in M2 to keep the inquisition away and raise my gen's pioty.

You can move your spy into your enemies city and he can open the gates for your army.

What benefits are their for having a spy?

Aside from opening the city gates for you, as civver already mentioned, spies can greatly increase your sight range, and tell you every detail about an enemy army.

Also, when placed in cities, they increase disorder levels. If you have a city that suddenly becomes very loud, there's probably an enemy spy causing trouble there.
