Hi guys.

Is there a patch or something that I can download to stop the annoyng problem with the whole stack getting killed because one unit in the stack dies when attacked?

Best,

You can try being safer with your units, just make sure when you have a big stack it has some good defensive units or your conquering the city the next turn. If you have a stack in a city or fortress then it will be safe from being destroyed all at once. Other than that you just have to try to avoid stacking a bunch of vulnerable units. Once you have engineers though you can rush a fortress pretty quickly so its not as big of an issue then, just fortify where your planning to camp out near the enemy city.

Besides, being on the other side of that really eases defense from barbarians. I've lost track of how many times I've taken out a stacked barbarian and seen things like 35 units killed, 42 units killed, or even 67 units killed. I've played with Raging Hordes and I've heard it can be even worse with Barbarian Wrath.

I like how neither answered his question, just gave ways to avoid getting a stack killed and a way to use it against the barbarians.

I have never seen any patches or mods that keeps stacks from getting killed in one battle. I do not even know if it would be possible to do. Would probably need input from someone who has experience with making mods to know for sure. If it can be done though I will be right in line behind you to download it.

Skyer released a no stack kills patch for Civ2: ToT, but I can't vouch for its stability; I've never tried it.

There are some scenarios that cover the map in invisible fortresses using Mercator's CivStack utility, thereby preventing stack kills. In ToT you can do something similar with airbases - if you don't use air units in the scenario. That eliminates the defensive bonuses of fortresses. In ToT they removed the city flag from airbases, so they don't act as double-irrigated railroad tiles. Of course, none of this is really appropriate for the standard game.

It appears to work fine. I didn't play through a whole game with it, but I used the cheat menu made a stack of warriors and gave the barbarian a tank and sure enough only lost 1 unit per attack.

The downside is I will have to play TOT and all of its ugly unit graphics for it to work :(
Guess next files I look for are for converting TOT graphics to original civ2 graphics.

Took me a while to figure out how to get his .txt file to unrar properly, so I took the liberty of attaching his file already in .rar format to make it easier.

Thanks for the link, Got graphics for everything now. I especially liked the rusted skin. Only setback was terrain I couldn't quite figure out the problem I was having with it, some of the tiles were distorted some even had words on them. will look into it some more after I get some sleep, too tired to keep messing with files right for now.

Does this explain your problem? If you save your games in the main ToT directory, Civ2 will attempt to load the resources from there when you next load the saved game. There's a load of legacy files in that directory.

I wasn't loading/saving anything. I just messed up the terrain files when I was screwing with em, when I used the backup files I made of the original terrain it worked fine again. I should probably read how to do something before just blindly trying next time.
