I usually play on a standard sized map, since my humble laptop cant really handle anything bigger.

I was wondering, how many civs do you guys put on a standar sized map? i've seen as few as 6 on this sized map. I like to play with maybe 9-10 other rivals, so thats its really competitive for landgrabbing and makes for many interesting early wars and some interesting diplomatic arrangements. i played a game with fewer civs (i think about 7 opponents) and i found it a bit dull in the early rounds simply because it took forever and a day to send troops over to wage a war.

I'm guessing from reading these forums that people like to get 6-8 cities setup before they start going to war. i like to have to rex early and competitively, and at most i wil get 3-4 cities, and then have to start conquering because there are so many civs on the map.

so how many opponents does everyone have on their maps?

On my last game it was me and 8 AI on Standard size, with Low sea level. That worked out excellently.

I always play large and I play with 13 civs. Of course, since I play terra, you still have to grab land early because you won't get to the 2nd continent till mid-game.
I play with low sea level btw.

I usually play on a standard sized map with between 8-11 civs, or a small map with between 6-8 civs. (I tend to avoid the larger maps just because I don't think that the unit movement points -- especially for naval and air units -- are properly balanced for those sizes.)

I agree w/you that the default number of civs is just a little too boring.

I play 10 civs (me + 9 AI) on standard size.

Quick related question .... in Custom Game, when I choose the other Civs to play against, do their positions on the list relate to their positions on the earth? In other words, the ones I put at the bottom, will they tend to be farther away from me at start up?

Usually not. Some Map scripts could handle that part differently however.

No. But, it does decide the order of the turns, I am fairly sure. And the order that the civs appear in, say, the Military Advisor screen.

It depends for me - I too play standard maps for the same reasons (laptop not quite up to bigger maps) but fluctuate between the default 7 civs and up to 11 AI (12 total) for a tighter map. I never go below 7 total.

I like to pack the map too. Right now I'm playing a standard Pangaea with high sea level and 10 rivals. I built 4 cities before I had to start warring for them.
