Hey everyone...let me take you back a few years...does anyone remember the game...STAR FLIGHT? by binary systems; released by Electronic Arts. It's space simulation game with a scenario that you play. You have to fuel your ship, mine, make colony recommendations, buy spaceship upgrades, etc. It is one of the best games I've ever seen...and it's as addictive as Civ! If you remember this I highly recommend picking up a copy of it...uhmm...actually, I do know where you can get a copy if you lost your old star flight disks...let's see...hmmm...
go to: http://www.starflight3.com/
of course...I know you have purchased a current registered version of the game, so downloading the game would just be to replace your old disks.

Right.

I know you don't believe me, but this is a really great game. If I had not discovered civ...then, well...I would still play it everyday. Right now, I am hoping for a Starflight III to come out...there is a web page for it and they are looking for 3-D artists...if there are any out there...contact me!

Is this game similiar to the failed experiment called "Battle Cruisser 2000AD"? Or was that 3000AD? Is it a DOS or a Windows game?

Actually it can be played on DOS or Windows. It isn't like any other game I've ever played but I would say it is closer to Civilization than any other game I've played.
You should check it out.

I should have also said in this years earlier that this game has several incarnations - StarFlight II was a big hit...and there was a problem with licensing for Starflight III so its sequel was released awkwardly as Protostar.

All of these games are from the DOS and early 16-bit windows era but are more than worth a try. There is also an open project for Starflight III that has a few downloads I believe. Just do a search on Yahoo! or Google or Altavista and it should come right up.

My god... that is quite a bump...

Hey Good People!

I did not realize that the SF3 link had changed -- here is the new one:

http://www.starflightcentral.com/

More than half a million visitors, SF3 has a number of downloads for the betas that will eventually be subroutines of the game itself. You can also view the storyline and some of the art and music. Yes, this game does continue live even with some of the work moving slowly. This is often a side effect of freeware and open source.

Check this one out.

Hey Phlegmak,

Thanks for the tip. I just downloaded the installer. Seems small enough. I was told some time ago by someone else to try vega strike -- it turned out to be over 100 mb of download (probably more now) and since I live in the ancient era (I use a dial up) that is just impossible.

Isn't this game a lot like Star Control? Doesn't it use some of the same characters or am I thinking of something else.

Thanks,

Ur-Quan Masters is Star Control 2. However, the people who made Star Control 2 released it as freeware. The game is very much a space adventure just like Starflight was. It has a complex story.

I downloaded all the pieces to Ur-Quan Masters. It was many megs in size, but I don't remember how big. There are many addons you can download such as new music.

Not too bad in size...I just opted not to download most parts and it was installed and running in about 45 min. That's okay, but 22hr. download is crazy. I will stay connected for 2-4 hours easy without being bumped off so I can download a 40-50 meg file. Anything more than that just doesn't work for me.

This game rocks! It has a lot of cool stuff in it...

Thanks again for the tip --- highly recommended. Another A+ game.

I remember playing it (Amiga 500?), and I remember thinking it was a good game.

Hey Volstag,

I'm not surprised. Starflight was ported to Amiga, Mac, and even Sega Genesis. There might have been other ports but I am not sure. The truth is, that this game was best known as a DOS game, but keep in mind only successful games got ported back in the 80's. We are used to seeing everything getting a windows, mac os x, xbox, ps2, etc. port without a second thought. It was simply too expensive in the past to do such a thing.

I only say this because it underscores the excellence of Starflight. I am truly shocked that there isn't a commercial Starflight 3, but I do know why. You see, licensing problems between EA games and Binary Systems stifled the production of an SF3 and the coding team was forced to release a mostly reworked game under the name Protostar. However, without the rich backstory of Starflight and the ability to play the new mission that was planned (because you needed info from the previous missions), Protostar lacked enough appeal to get it off the ground for a following.

Truly sad, but as I said before...the freeware version is out there, just refer to the link I posted earlier.
