Star Wars in FREEDEE!

Well, I went to see it today. There were a few things that I took away with me.

1. I had not yet realized how annoying and stupid Jar Jar Binks is. Until today, I had only put up with him. But after seeing it in the theater, it really struck me how lame he was.

2. Seeing it at home is nothing compared to the theater experience. I felt real anguish and pain at Qui-Gon's death (ssh, spoilers), and real exuberance at the destruction of the control ship. As well as real happiness with the closing scene. I really enjoyed watching this in theaters.

3. 3 for 3D. The 3D experience didn't make anything totally more awesome, but it instead fleshed out the area and made the perspective from the viewer a little different. I've seen it at least 20 times in a small TV in 2D, and seeing it in massive 3D made me notice small things that I might have missed before.

4a. Additions. There were a lot of small additions to the movie. Either deleted scenes, or new things in CGI. Some were interesting, others could have been left out. For example, they added a small scene where Shmi talks to Anakin before the podrace, telling him to "be brave" or something. On the VHS cassette that we own, there is no such conversation. They also added a whole bunch of introductions of the various podracers, including the alligator guy, as well as a few others. That was interesting, but I could see why they had taken it out. During the podrace they also showed a vendor selling snacks to the crowd. Hooray, but boring.
They also replaced puppet Yoda with CGI Yoda, which all of my friends agreed was a huge mistake. He looked very fake, and I prefer the puppet version much better. I can understand why they would CGI him during his battles, but at the times when he is just standing around, he would be much better as a puppet.

4b. Deletions. They ommitted a couple of whistles and trills from R2-D2, as well as a few other things that I couldn't recall. With R2, when they are about to leave Coruscant:
Jar Jar: "Wesa going home!"
Anakin: "C'mon, R2!"
In the original, R2 whistles: "Phweet-do-de-do!"

And it was missing in today's version. Nothing major, but interesting.

Overall Thoughts:

I enjoyed it! The theater experience really made the space battle much more tense, as well as the lightsaber duel much more painful. Altogether, I enjoyed watching a great movie.
