The downside of Petra in gathering storm is that building a nice one is practically BEGGING for Haboobs all late game. (Max level dust storms that seem to be unending late game)

now grab suzerainity with Nazca, plop some lines and stare in awe at that beauty. But it doesnt seem to be there as far as I can see

Yep, Petra+Nazca makes some nasty cities. Even without Nazca, finding city-states that let you build improvements on desert are huge as well. Cahokia Mounds can go on desert tiles if I recall, and they're right next door, so would be a prime target to cozy up to.

Petra is one of those awkward wonders that's incredibly valuable, but comes with a significant risk of losing a race vs to the AI. (As opposed to Stonehenge or Macchu Picchu, which I never come close to getting, or the Arsenal, which I always get.) Getting Petra is about the point in the game winning becomes a matter of time. Getting beaten to Petra is one of the most frustrating things that can happen to you; finding the AI has built Petra in a stupid spot is the icing on the cake.

My problem with Petra is... what do you do with all the Production?

It’s the same problem with giant Three City Aqueduct Dam Industrial Zone constructions and various other Wonders high Production Cities.

All very fun for the Meme value, but by the time I’ve built them there’s very little useful they can actually do (or, really, build). I usually end up just pumping out a few extra units, then flip these Cities to running projects, which is not really much of a fun pay-off.
