starvation later in the game....

Last night during my game, I started getting starvation in my capital city. All the tiles available for farms were taken as were tiles for cottages and mines etc. I had been pumping out military most of the game due to an ongoing war as well as general defense.
My civ had been growing steadily up to this point.
My question is, what was I doing to create the starvation and how can I combat that when most or all of my tiles for farming were used up? Any tips or ideas on this would be appreciated...thx
 
I'm guessing you lost a lot of health resources due to being cut off from a trading partner or just had them pillaged. They'll grow back once you get the resources back. The problem is when you rely too much on happy resources from other civs. If you should lose a lot of them due to war, you might have cities filled with protesters eating food and producing nothing.
 
It might be that you have too many cottages/towns and not enough farms to support your population.

It could also be that some of your citizens have become unhappy because of "war weariness" if you have been fighting wars for a long time. Look in the city display to see what your happiness/unhappiness values are. If unhappiness > happiness, some of your citizens still consume food but don't produce anything.
 
The odd number food production -1 food starvation is natural though lategame. Some will be stagnant, and some will be dynamically stagnant because of this.
 
What you may have to do is convert Mines to Windmills (especially on Grassland Hills) just to try and balance food production vs consumption.
 
Every time I go to war some of my cities start to starve, just because of war weariness. And it doesn't take as long to set in as you might like either.
 
Yeah, I was shocked by the amount of war weariness I ran into the first time I tried a mid-late game offensive war.

Next time I do that, I'm gonna make sure I can end the war QUICKLY.

yes, I have found that too.. procrastination in military affairs can be costly in many regards now.. when a swift and strategic execution of war will work out very nicely.. also challenging to devise plans for such speedy wars
 
Also, don't discount cutting down forest in a city already on the borderline with health vs sickness. I cut down a couple forest tiles in my capitol the other night. It was right on the border, and the loss of health made it start to starve. I was able to remedy it quick enough, but the point is cutting down trees, especially in the late game when you have a semi-toxic environment from forges and factories and the like can make that tiny difference.
