It is just so hard to die in this game. If you are a colonist you are more like a god than a human.. you simply can only get killed, never die by yourself . In fact most of the initial settlers would die of hunger and consequently - diseases (e.g. only ~70 colonists out of ~350 survived winter 1609/1610 in Jamestown owing to lack of proteins), and most of indians would die of diseases brought from Europe like smallpox, cholera or tuberculosis. Starvation should carry more severe consequences, that automated emigation trick should be disabled. No food = time to dig some holes. Long starvation time = spreadin diseases and even more shallow graves.
Then find something to make that wandering units consume food, since, as said above, you would just have to move colonists out of a colony to avoid starvation.
This "trick" (I would call it myself a feature) reduces micromanagement, which is good imho.
