Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

Open seas recon shows nothing other than FREE warships.
Here’s a picture of the very busy Council Strait mid-term in full scouting mode:

The Treasury dropped one citizen this turn (from 19 to 18) and is still showing red in F11, so there is no need to hit that city this turn. Our jet fighters still can’t reach quite as far as I’d like, but we can recon the Bayou:

Council is starting to defend their tiles with units, but at least those units can’t guard cities also. I guess we have to find a way to get transports in range.

I stare at the map for a while trying to figure out which tiles to bombard with our 10 stealth bombers and possibly 7 regular bombers.

The Bayou looks very difficult to bring to starvation. It can always work 12 water tiles (one of which is a fish), so at 12 citizens, it is plus 4 food. They have too many modern armor on one flood plain, so at 13 citizens, they are plus 7 food. The other flood plain provides 2 food even if cratered, and they have a protected sugar plains tile, so at 15 citizens, they are still plus 7 food. We will never get them down to anything worse than minus 1, and it is a lot of work to do that, so we’ll leave that city alone for now.

The Chamber has a cow and 2 flood plains, so I don’t think we can realistically starve that city very much.

The Silo is already yellow on F11, and it has up to 4 irrigated tiles to hit, but we can’t recon there, and it is only reachable by stealth bombers.

The Gulag is out of recon range and out of bomber range but has up to 6 irrigated tiles to hit. It is not on F11, so we can’t see its current status.

The Institute is probably the best target within range of our bombers. Coastal cities look too hard to starve, and The Institute has some mountains and hills in its territory, so it should be starvable. Recon The Institute:

I pick out the following tiles to aim for:

Comments welcome for future turns.

As our bombers fly overhead, the light blue dot west of The Gulag turns out to be mined now instead of irrigated, so we hit the irrigated grass southeast of The Gulag instead. We were either very lucky, or Council has all their jet fighters doing recon because we didn’t see a single interceptor, and 16 of our 17 planes hit. Next turn another 4 regular bombers will join the party.

Our compact end of turn position:

That FREE stack is 4 cruisers and 2 destroyers.
Recon by The Treasury:

F11 is kind of interesting (this is before any micromanagement):

The Treasury is still in starvation mode which is good, but both The Chamber and The Silo have negative food, and we haven’t even hit either of them. Maybe they are getting smacked around by pollution (which is going to be hard for them to find time to clean), or they are shifting tiles around to try to keep some cities from starving, but they will be emptying food bins for faster starvation later.

Anyway, I stick to the plan and bomb the unguarded hills first.

One bomber gets shot down by an interceptor, but his place in the carrier is immediately taken by a stealth bomber that we just completed. We hit 12 times and miss 5 leaving The Treasury as a city that will not build spaceship parts quite as quickly as it could before:

All 6 unguarded hills are cratered. That is also The Council’s only source of aluminum that was just disconnected so they will have to waste some worker turns on that one.

We have 3 stealth bombers left, so we recon The Institute:

We return to emphasizing food. Another bomber misses, but we still place a crater in the irrigated desert to The Institute’s southwest.

I think next turn some carriers will head east and north (but keeping out of range of subs) to get a better look at what we can bomb near The Chamber, The Admiralty, and The Gulag. Some destroyers head out that way now to do an earlier check for subs next turn before our valuable boats move.

Next steps, we slide 6 transports out to threaten The Nursery next turn. For future reference, The Nursery costs 192 gold to investigate.

I get a little cute on Council’s east coast by running some destroyers through the coastal waters to try to cost them a little food and income. All boats ended the turn out of the range of Council’s cruise missiles.

We start barricading non-coastal tiles.

The Pier has a Mobile SAM on top. We spend 192 gold investigating The Nursery – I don’t really think it will be underdefended, but I’m dying to know what the war weariness situation is, and this is a good excuse.

(see analysis of pic in Council diplo thread).

Bombing time. The Treasury lost another citizen and is still at negative food in F11, so there is no need to hit that. I know at least 4 planes will hit The Nursery to start the starvation there. The Silo and The Chamber haven’t lost citizens yet, but they have both been red in F11, so we should try to starve them some more to empty their bins. The Admiralty was red last turn but is now white again, but we should be able to drive that back to red. That should be enough targets – we will probably run out of planes before then…

Our first bomber misses, but the next 4 hit improvements and take away 6 fpt from The Nursery. We have 5 more bombers, and they can’t actually reach anything I just named as a target, so they will hit The Institute again – that has to be at negative fpt also with all the damage we’ve done around there. The first bomber missed, but showed a stack of units led by a modern armor or mech on the dyes tile and workers on the aluminum tile and the cratered plains to the north of the target tile, but there was nobody on their iron hill so we could smash another hill if we choose (next run, I’ll take a pic). After some thought, we change targets to hit the iron hill:

Three bombers crater the iron hill. One bomber and 11 stealth bombers to go. The final bomber takes the rails off the irrigated grass between The Institute and The Treasury, and our first stealth bomber craters that tile.

Ten stealth bombers to go. The Chamber has 2 irrigated flood plains. The Admiralty has 2 irrigated grasslands, and The Silo has 4 irrigated plains (one with wheat). With 10 runs left, I think we will hit The Chamber and The Admiralty this turn.

The fighter in The Chamber watches as our stealth bombers rip up both of The Chamber’s irrigated tiles.

A stealth bomber hits the tile west of The Admiralty (the Admiralty has no land units garrisoned – a destroyer is visible there), but it was barricaded so that won’t hurt The Council. The next 2 stealth bombers hit the irrigated tile NW of The Admiralty. We take 3 more runs at the tile west of The Admiralty – the first missed, the second was shot down by a jet, and the third destroyed the rails, so 2 runs next turn will finish the job.

The Admiralty is in negative fpt per F11, but I move the 2 destroyers into its fat cross temporarily to get citizens off the coastal tiles hopefully to speed the bin emptying process.

Boats moved to final positions. 3 Jets on carriers on air superiority. More barricading done on both continents.

The usual recon of areas within 6 tiles of our shore reveals the usual nothing dangerous.

Check out which of Council’s cities to hit this turn. The Admiralty and The Treasury both lost 1 citizen and are still red in F11, so there is no need to hit them. The Silo is red in F11 but hasn’t lost anyone yet, and The Chamber is yellow in F11 (was red previously) and hasn’t lost anyone yet so those 2 are both targets. The Institute lost a person, but it is not on F11 so that’s a possibility. The Gulag hasn’t lost anyone and isn’t on F11. The Nursery did not lose a citizen – they must have the governor on there and switched to sea tiles so we won’t be able to starve that city after all.

First recon trip goes to The Institute:

No matter which 14 tiles they are working, I don’t think they can get more than 27 food, so we can ignore The Institute for 1 more turn. Other jets head as far north as they can reach. Our bombers’ range is starting to limit our choices:

We start with the irrigated barricaded tile W-SW of The Chamber. I usually try to avoid barricades, but we are running out of irrigated tiles to hit, and 4 bombs to take away 3 food is better than 2 bombs to take away 1 food from a mined flatland tile.

Our first bomber gets shot down. Out of the next 6 runs, we miss twice, but crater that tile. The Chamber is now red in F11, so it was working that tile. Three bombers to go, and we hit the uranium SW of The Gulag once while the other 2 miss.

The first stealth bomber finishes cratering the uranium by The Gulag, and the next 9 all pound The Chamber starting with the cow, but 1 missed. Our final stealth bomber goes after the irrigated roads by The Institute just because that is the only tile with roads showing instead of rails – it misses anyway.

Spoiler :

The usual recon of areas within 6 tiles of our shore reveals the usual nothing dangerous.

Four cities lost citizens to starvation last turn (The Squeeze dropped one citizen also but it was from building a worker). Cities to hit this turn:

The Chamber – lost a citizen, red on F11 => leave alone.
The Treasury - lost a citizen, red on F11 => leave alone.
The Admiralty - lost a citizen, red on F11 => leave alone.
The Institute – lost a citizen, not on F11 => try to hit 1-2 tiles.
The Silo – didn’t lose anybody, red on F11 => try to pound.
The Gulag – didn’t lose anybody, not on F11 => try to pound.

Institute, Silo, and Gulag are the winners. Recon as close as we can to all 3.

The Council has opted to repair their hills – I think that is good news for us.

We obviously hit the irrigated tile north of The Institute costing 2 food with one bomb and presumably guaranteeing another citizen lost in The Institute.

Our bombers’ range is limiting us as we can’t reach the irrigated tile south of The Silo so we take out the mined plains west of The Gulag and the mined BG between the Gulag and The Arboretum, and then we hit the partially reimproved tiles N-E of The Treasury and somewhere near The Institute.

The stealth bombers start with the irrigated tile south of The Silo, then hit the wheat between the Gulag and The Silo and the irrigated plains by The Silo. Next hit the irrigated plains NW-NW of The Silo in case it is working that tile (see that the tile NW of The Silo is polluted). We disconnect their aluminum again on the hill SE of The Institute. Our final 2 stealth runs take out irrigated tiles near the Gulag that were already cratered.

We are almost certain to lose 1 nuclear sub since I tried to move him further than he could go and he ended up all alone within range of Council’s bombers (but there is a jet fighter on air superiority 1 tile away, so hopefully we will take out 1 of Council’s bombers).

11 bomber runs, 12 stealth bomber runs.

4 missed.
1 shot down by interceptor.
7 new tiles cratered; 4 roaded, irrigated, and cratered tiles hit again destroying the road and irrigation; 1 road destroyed on a previously cratered hill (aluminum).

Ignoring The Arboretum and The Aerie which each have over 500 shields, the next cities to reach the 500 for Apollo are The Gulag (4 turns), The Chamber (6 turns even after sabotage), and The Treasury (6 turns). Bombers can only reach The Treasury, so we want to bomb there first, but that is within the range of Council’s jet in The Chamber, so this turn we use a couple stealth bombers first to try to eliminate the jet. Stealth bombers over The Chamber:

Destroys barracks.
Shoots down interceptor (but not the plane in The Chamber), stealth bomber 1/4.
Shot down by interceptor (in The Chamber – jet there is now 2/4).
Miss.
Jet fighter 2/4 -> dead.

Bombers over The Treasury:

Factory destroyed :dance:. The Treasury should now be at least 11 turns away from Apollo (assuming it had a power plant).

The Institute is now the top city that can be reached by bombers. Bombers over The Institute:

Miss.
Jet fighter destroyed (I didn’t even know there was one there – a cruise missile was on top).

I take a break because I am too excited, and I don’t want to move carelessly. Now if the Council does not change The Aerie or The Arboretum to the Apollo Program, then Apollo should be at least 5 turns away, giving us plenty of time to accumulate cash for more sabotages and perform more bombings to limit Council’s spt. I feel better about our chances of winning this game than I have in a long time :).

The Council preferred to keep their terrain covered and their cities undefended. I think it is better for us to hit their cities directly anyway. Top threats to build Apollo now:

The Gulag – 3 turns
The Chamber – 5 turns
The Admiralty – 7 turns
The Igloo – 7 turns.

Our bombers can’t reach any of them. The only cities our bombers can reach are more than 10 turns away from Apollo. We’re going to take a bit of a chance here. Our carriers will move one tile east so the bombers can reach The Gulag. It will mean our carriers are within range of any nuclear subs in The New Yard, but a two tile ship wall should be sufficient to keep them safe. Besides, I think we want our boats to move a bit closer this turn so we have enough movement to bombard subs in cities next turn.

We slide the carriers over and commence bombing The Gulag:

Shot down by interceptor.
Shot down by interceptor.
Shot down by interceptor.
University destroyed.
Library destroyed.
Courthouse destroyed :smoke:.
Factory destroyed.

That should take care of The Gulag’s shield production for a bit. The bombers can’t reach any other important cities, but they can take a few shields away from The Silo which is an important city.

On the mountain S-SW of The Silo:

Railroad destroyed.
Mine and road destroyed, cratered.

On the plains S-SE of The Silo:

Railroad destroyed.

Stealth bombers over The Chamber:

Marketplace destroyed.
Library destroyed.
Miss.

University destroyed.
Citizen killed.

Factory destroyed.

Next up are The Admiralty and The Igloo.

Stealth bomber over The Admiralty:

Miss.

A destroyer was in The Admiralty, and there is no use sinking that, so we’ll switch to The Igloo:

Jet fighter ¼ -> destroyed.
Citizen killed.

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

Start the bombardment of The Pier – heavy units first since we need to take maximum hps.

Battleship: 4/4 Carrier -> 2/4
Battleship: 4/4 Carrier -> 2/4

A destroyer appears on top of Council’s stack. We have no more battleships in range, so we start with the cruisers.

Cruiser: 4/4 destroyer -> 3/4
Cruiser: ¾ destroyer->1/4

2/4 carrier is now on top. Since we only need 1 more hp, we switch to destroyer.

Destroyer: 2/4 carrier -> ¼
Destroyer: 2/4 carrier -> ¼

A 4/4 nuclear sub appears.

Cruiser: 4/4 nuclear sub -> 2/4
Cruiser: 4/4 nuclear sub -> 3/4
Cruiser: 4/4 nuclear sub -> 2/4
Cruiser: 3/4 nuclear sub ->1/4
Cruiser: ¾ nuclear sub ->1/4
Cruiser: ¾ nuclear sub ->2/4
Cruiser: ¾ nuclear sub ->1/4

The ¼ carrier is now the top unit, so we switch to aerial bombardment.

Bomber: Shot down by interceptor
Bomber: Shot down by interceptor
Bomber: Shot down by interceptor
Bomber: Shot down by interceptor
Bomber: Shot down by interceptor
Bomber: Shot down by interceptor (fighter – the others were all jet fighters)

That pretty much sucked, but since we just saw their fighter, hopefully there will be no more interceptors.

Bomber: Kills citizen
Bomber: 4/4 jet fighter -> ¼
Bomber: Destroys marketplace
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 fighter ->1/4
Stealth Bomber: ¼ jet fighter destroyed
Stealth Bomber: Misses
Stealth Bomber: Kills citizen
Stealth Bomber: ¼ fighter destroyed
Stealth Bomber: ¼ carrier sunk

A transport now appears on top. We don’t want to waste our planes on that.

Destroyer: 4/4 transport -> 2/4
Destroyer: 4/4 transport-> 2/4
Destroyer: 4/4 transport->2/4

Stealth Bomber: ¼ carrier->sunk
Stealth Bomber: 2/4 nuclear sub ->sunk

Destroyer: 2/4 transport ->1/4
Destroyer: 2/4 transport ->1/4
Destroyer: 2/4 transport ->1/4

Stealth Bomber: 1/4 nuclear sub->sunk

They still have 2 ¼ nuclear subs, and we are out of bombers. I throw the fighters in (why not? – there’s nowhere else we need to recon this turn).

Jet fighter: Destroys courthouse
Stealth fighter: ¼ sub->sunk

Realign boats – see screenshots at end.

All set to something to get mobilization shields.

Attempt to plant spy in Council for 104 gold – planted!

Carefully attempt to sabotage production in The Aerie for 9690 gold.

Attempt to plant another spy in Council for 104 gold – planted! Not enough cash to make another sabotage attempt.

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

Send a fighter over to see what Council’s set up looks like:

Each coastal mountain has 30+ units on it. They have a surprisingly large number of regular units.

The stack on the airfield is 4 modern armor, a mobile SAM, 10 bombers, and 5 jet fighters.
Maybe we can kill those solo conscript mechs if we have planes left over.

Send a couple of destroyers out to check for subs. No subs, but we find this FREE stack:

1 battleship, 1 cruiser, and 4 destroyers.
Council has 7 modern armor and 2 cruise missiles on the tile north of The Bayou.

Time to start bombarding – the subs from The Pier must be in The Bayou. So we bomb it:

Destroyer: 4/4 destroyer->2/4
Destroyer: 4/4 nuclear sub->2/4
Destroyer: 4/4 nuclear sub->2/4
Destroyer: 4/4 nuclear sub->2/4
Destroyer: 4/4 nuclear sub->3/4
Destroyer: Miss
Destroyer: 4/4 nuclear sub->3/4
Destroyer: 4/4 nuclear sub->3/4
Destroyer: 4/4 nuclear sub->3/4
Destroyer: 4/4 nuclear sub->2/4
Cruiser: 2/4 destroyer->1/4
Cruiser: ¾ nuclear sub->1/4
Cruiser: Miss
Cruiser: ¾ nuclear sub->1/4
Cruiser: ¾ nuclear sub->1/4
Cruiser: ¾ nuclear sub->1/4
Cruiser: 2/4 nuclear sub->1/4

So the top units right now are 2/4 subs. We want to have enough boats to bomb at least 2 hps off a big stack so we can attack a modern armor with our marine army. A cruiser will only hit a fortified mech on a mountain with a radar town 25% of the time, so we could need 8 cruisers to take off 2 hps. Stealth bombers sink 2/4 subs over 80%, so I will stop the naval bombardment here and go to planes. Stealth bombers first, and we will use the bombers to sink ¼ subs.

Stealth bomber: 2/4 nuclear sub->sunk
Stealth bomber: shot down by anti-aircraft
Stealth bomber: harbor destroyed
Stealth bomber: 2/4 nuclear sub->sunk
Stealth bomber: 2/4 nuclear sub->sunk

That should be all the 2/4 nuclear subs, so we switch to bombers.

Bomber: Miss
Bomber: ¼ destroyer->sunk
Bomber: shot down by anti-aircraft
Bomber: marketplace destroyed
Bomber: ¼ nuclear sub->sunk

And that is all the old-fashioned bombers we have left, so back to Stealth

Stealth bomber: offshore platform destroyed
Stealth bomber: shot down by anti-aircraft
Stealth bomber: shot down by anti-aircraft
Stealth bomber: ¼ sub->sunk
Stealth bomber: ¼ sub->sunk
Stealth bomber: ¼ sub->sunk
Stealth bomber: ¼ sub->sunk
Stealth bomber: ¼ sub->sunk
Stealth bomber: ¼ transport->sunk

No more warships in that city, so no more bombing there. Against the mechs on Mt. Radar Tower:

Cruiser: 4/4 mech infantry->3/4
Cruiser: Miss
Cruiser: Miss
Cruiser: 4/4 mech infantry->3/4

4/4 modern armor is now on top for the marines.

17/17 marine army vs. 4/4 modern armor->12/17 marine army
17/17 marine army vs. 4/4 modern armor->10/17 marine army
15/15 marine army vs. 4/4 modern armor->6/15 marine army

On mountain south of The Treasury:

Battleship: 2/4 mech infantry->1/4

On mountain east of The New Yard:

Battleship: Miss

Grass tile E-SE of The New Yard:

Destroyer: Destroys rails
Destroyer: Miss
Cruiser: Destroys road and irrigation, craters

Grass tile S-SE of The New Yard:

Cruiser: Miss
Cruiser: Destroys rails
Destroyer: Destroys road and irrigation, craters

We only have 6 stealth bombers left. The probably of killing the 2/2 mech is less than 20%. We will try to kill the ½ mech, then use what is left on cities.

On mountain south of The Treasury:

Stealth bomber: ½ mech->destroyed

The Council info sheet says that The Arboretum is the city that can reach 640 shields fastest, so to The Arboretum we go:

Stealth bomber: marketplace destroyed
Stealth bomber: miss
Stealth bomber: courthouse destroyed
Stealth bomber: citizen killed

All set to something….

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

Start by doing the usual recon to put off the decision of stealing/declaring war as long as possible in case someone wants to respond. I even play with the workers and cities for a bit.
Recon does reveal a redlined Council transport northwest of FREE’s city of Freeborn on a small island – we should be able to find something available to sink that. No subs anywhere to be found.
Most nuclear subs continue toward Estoc in case we need nukes on Council.
A little fighter recon shows that the mountains are still guarded, and it is still impossible to carve out a safe landing point.
Our brand new carrier gets 4 stealth bombers on it and moves to Estoc. A few warships head homeward to escort it to the battle front in a couple turns.
It is time to decide, and with a seemingly insurmountable lead (with 2 votes) we declare on Council.

Northwest of Freeborn:

4/4 destroyer vs. ¼ transport -> 4/4 destroyer.

We need a safe spot for our boats to end out of range of Council’s cruise missiles/artillery (battleships are annoyingly slow!), so

Bombardment of roaded cratered flood plain S-S-W of The Chamber:

Destroyer misses.
Destroyer misses.
Destroyer destroys road.

We want to kill another couple modern armor with marine armies, so we need to bombard 1 4/4 mech infantry down to ¾ to get a modern armor on top.

On mountain S-S of The Treasury:

Cruiser bombards 4/4 mech infantry to ¾.
15/17 marine army vs. 4/4 modern armor -> 7/17 marine army.
17/17 marine army vs. 4/4 modern armor ->9/17 marine army.

The other marine army is only 10/15 so it doesn’t attack this turn.

Target #1 this turn is The Silo, so our carriers move a little closer to get our regular bombers within range.

The Silo:

Bomber – miss.
Bomber – destroys courthouse.
Bomber – miss.
Bomber – destroys factory.

I believe we can now expect The Silo to be 18 turns away from 640 shields, so we move on to

The Igloo:

Stealth Bomber – citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber – citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber – miss.
Stealth Bomber – factory destroyed.

That should now be over 20 turns away. If The Aerie is still capable of 50 spt then it is only 12 turns away so

The Aerie:

Stealth Bomber – temple destroyed.
Stealth Bomber – 4/4 jet fighter -> ¼.
Stealth Bomber – nuclear plant destroyed.

With a nuclear plant gone, The Aerie should no longer be a threat, but I want to finish off that jet.

Stealth Bomber – ¼ jet fighter destroyed.

Our lead target now seems to be

The Arboretum:

Stealth Bomber – factory destroyed.

At size 7 reaching 640 shields in 14 turns, our biggest threat is now

The Institute:

Stealth Bomber – citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber – citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber – citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber – marketplace destroyed.
Stealth Bomber – citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber – citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber – courthouse destroyed.
Stealth Bomber – factory destroyed.

The Gulag is now the biggest threat even though we already destroyed its factory, and it is only at 16 spt. Since the factory is already gone, we recon with a stealth fighter to see what terrain improvements are worth bombing. We will strike at its food first.

South of The Gulag – irrigated railed BG:

Stealth Bomber – rails destroyed.
Stealth Bomber – irrigation and roads destroyed, cratered.

That’s all for stealth bombers. We still have 1 stealth fighter, so he bombs

Southwest of The Gulag – irrigated, roaded, cratered, uranium:

Stealth fighter – miss.

We only have 2 jet fighters left with movement among our planes, and I opt to put both on air superiority instead of trying to bomb 1 tile.

I’d call that a highly successful turn as I think Council is now a minimum of 15 turns away from completing the final part, and they could be further :).

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

The usual homeland recon reveals the usual nothing. Let the attack begin.

Recon the Council southland to see if they made a mistake and let us land – no luck, but there is a redlined transport in The New Yard to sink if we have an extra plane.

The bombing starts with The Admiralty:

Bomber: Units injured. I couldn’t see what was hurt, but there is an artillery visible in The Admiralty, so it is either a plane or a boat, and either seems worth attacking to me.
Bomber: Units injured. Council now only has 20 jet fighters, so we know what we hit.
Bomber: Marketplace destroyed.
Bomber: Citizen killed.

Stealth Bomber: Factory destroyed.

The Aerie:

Stealth Bomber: Marketplace destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Factory destroyed.

Send a fighter to recon The Gulag to check out which tiles to hit:

Very interesting. We still have 20 stealth bombers to go, and those stacks are not that big. We do want to kill modern armor so we can land eventually, and The Gulag has 14 turns to go before 640, and we can’t hit valuable tiles without killing modern armor, so we attack the units. We don’t care about marines, and it seems prudent to avoid the mobile SAMs, so we attack a stack of 4 modern armor.

NE-NE of The Gulag:

Stealth Bomber: 4/4 modern armor -> ¾.
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 modern armor -> ¾.
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 modern armor-> ¾.
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 modern armor ->3/4.
Stealth Bomber: ¾ modern armor -> 2/4.
Stealth Bomber: ¾ modern armor -> ¼.
Stealth Bomber: ¾ modern armor -> 2/4.
Stealth Bomber: ¾ modern armor -> ¼.
Stealth Bomber: 2/4 modern armor killed.
Stealth Bomber: 2/4 modern armor -> ¼.
Stealth Bomber: ¼ modern armor killed.
Stealth Bomber: ¼ modern armor killed.
Stealth Bomber: ¼ modern armor killed.

That took more bombing runs than I expected. Seven stealth bombers to go is not enough to destroy another stack. I’m not sure what to do here. I think we go back to destroying tile improvements, so I pick out a bunch of tiles to aim for starting with the one the modern armor were on.

Stealth Bomber: Missed.
Stealth Bomber: Rails destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Mine & road destroyed, cratered.

Southwest of The Gulag:

Stealth Bomber: Road & irrigation destroyed.

NW-NW of The Chamber:

Stealth Bomber: Missed.
Stealth Bomber: Irrigation and road destroyed. Unfortunately, The Chamber was working that tile because it is now negative fpt in F11 so that didn’t hurt The Gulag.

Northwest of The Gulag:

Stealth Bomber: Mine destroyed.
Stealth Fighter: Missed.
Jet Fighter: Missed.
Jet Fighter: Missed.

S-S of The Treasury:

Battleship: 4/4 mech infantry -> ¾.
14/15 marine army vs. 4/4 modern armor -> 12/15 marine army.
12/15 marine army vs. 4/4 modern armor -> 3/15 marine army.

S-SW of The Chamber:

Cruiser: Missed.
Cruiser: Missed.
Cruiser: Mine & road destroyed, cratered.

South of The Chamber:

Cruiser: Road destroyed.

SW-SW of The Chamber:

Battleship: Missed. I apparently accidentally hit space or something because that battleship now has no movement left. Unfortunately it will be within range of Council’s cruise missiles, so I’ll have to split our stack.
Battleship: Missed. OK, this one has no movement left either, and I definitely did not hit space. What the heck is that? I move 1 tile, then bombard, and it is out of movement?! I don’t get it…

Recon The Silo and see the bad news (picture in the Commander-in-Chief’s thread). I think bombers can kill citizens before they kill all units, so I guess we will bomb The Silo directly. Well, that had to be some of the worst bombing ever. We knocked The Silo from 14 citizens to 8, but Council can just add more workers, and they will probably be smart enough to put more units in it next turn.

Tile E-SE of The Treasury:

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

The usual homeland recon reveals the usual nothing.

Send a jet fighter to recon The Chamber area:

There is no chance of cutting the pink dots – there is no way we have enough firepower to kill those units so we can hit the terrain underneath them. The green dots definitely look possible.

We have 2 fully healthy marine armies, so I’d like to attack The Admiralty with them. The surrounding water is easy enough to check for subs, but we have to make sure there are no subs in The Ways and The Admiralty also. We will have to bombard them and make sure we hit land units to guarantee there are no sea units in them.

I think I know where everything is going, so I can finally start moving ships. There is no way I’m going to finish this before work today – there is too much stuff that can go wrong.

To start – we want to use our battleships to destroy green dot improvements to take some pressure off our planes. Tile southwest of The Chamber:

Battleship: Miss.

And our battleship has no movement left again :confused:.

Battleship: Miss.

I checked before bombarding – it had 2 movement left. After bombarding it has none. Bombarding costs 2 movement points for battleships?

Battleship: Barricade destroyed.

Time for the planes to do their thing. Every other move depends on their success so they have to go next.

Bomber: Rails destroyed.
Bomber: Miss.
Bomber: Miss.
Bomber: Road destroyed.

Tile SW-SW of The Chamber:

Stealth Bomber: Barricade destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Rails destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Miss.
Stealth Bomber: Road destroyed.

Tile west of The Chamber:

Stealth Bomber: Barricade destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Rails destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Road destroyed.

Tile northwest of The Chamber:

Stealth Bomber: Road destroyed.

Tile north of The Chamber:

Stealth Bomber: Rails destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Miss.
Stealth Bomber: Road and mine destroyed, cratered.

Tile south of The Admiralty:

Stealth Bomber: Rails destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Road destroyed.

A destroyer heads north to run a sub check – no subs in the water and no units at all in The Ways.

The Admiralty:

Destroyer: Miss.
Destroyer: Miss.
Destroyer: Miss.
Destroyer: Miss.
Destroyer: Miss.
Destroyer: 4/4 Mech infantry -> ¾.

No subs in The Admiralty, so our transports will be safe up there.

17/17 marine army (artillery defense missed) vs. 4/4 mech infantry -> 8/18 marine army.
17/17 marine army vs. 4/4 modern armor -> 13/17 marine army.

On the southern front, we actually find a sub (and a transport):

By The New Yard:

4/4 destroyer vs. 4/4 submarine -> ¾ destroyer.
4/4 destroyer vs. 4/4 transport -> 3/5 destroyer.

I think we have 12 stealth bombers left. The Gulag is now Council’s #1 threat, and I can’t resist the lone modern armor on a tile, so southeast of The Gulag:

Stealth Bomber: 4/4 modern armor -> 2/4.
Stealth Bomber: 2/4 modern armor -> ¼.
Stealth Bomber: ¼ modern armor destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Rails destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Miss.
Stealth Bomber: Road and irrigation destroyed, cratered.

6 to go. Send out a stealth fighter to do a little recon to see if there is anything else vulnerable by The Gulag:

I suppose we will take out the tile north of The Gulag even though Council could repair it right away if they want. They won’t get any shields for it this turn. North of The Gulag:

Stealth Bomber: Miss.
Stealth Bomber: Rails destroyed.
Stealth Bomber: Road and mine destroyed, cratered.

3 more – I’ll knock out the road beneath Babe’s settler. Northwest of The Gulag:

Stealth Bomber: Road and mine destroyed, cratered.

I can’t see anything else we can do with 2 more planes, so I hit The Gulag directly to try to kill some citizens.

The Gulag:

Stealth Bomber: Citizen killed.
Stealth Bomber: Citizen killed.

Perfect! There is nothing else to do with our other stealth fighter, so

Stealth Fighter: Miss.

I start sliding some subs south from Estoc. It appears we won’t be nuking Council (certainly not soon), so our subs will take up positions near our core cities in case FREE does something stupid again.

Tile south of The Ways:

Destroyer: Rails destroyed.
Destroyer: Road and mine destroyed, cratered.

As I’m going through the rest of the units, we have a newly built stealth bomber we can’t fit on a transport, so it bombs the only Council tile it can reach.

The Nursery:

Stealth Bomber: I have no idea what happened.

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

Send a jet fighter to recon The Chamber area:

After being scolded by Calis in the turn tracker thread, I guess I better get this done :p.

The usual homeland recon reveals the usual nothing.

Start with our bombers going after the lone marine since there is no SAM on that tile.

E-S of The Gulag:

Bomber: 4/4 marine -> 2/4
Bomber: 2/4 marine killed
Bomber: Rails destroyed
Bomber: Road, mine destroyed
Stealth Bomber: Radar tower destroyed; cratered.

SE-S of The Gulag:

Stealth Bomber: 4/4 marine -> 2/4
Stealth Bomber: 3/3 Mobile SAM killed

Stealth Bomber: Radar tower destroyed

9 stealth bombers to go…

The Chamber:

Battleship: 4/4 Jet fighter -> ¾
Battleship: 4/4 Jet fighter -> ¾
Battleship: 4/4 Jet fighter -> 2/4
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 Jet fighter -> ¼
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 Jet fighter -> ¾
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 Jet fighter -> 2/4
Stealth Bomber: Coal plant destroyed
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 Jet fighter -> 2/4
Stealth Bomber: 4/4 Jet fighter -> ¼
Stealth Bomber: Miss
Stealth Bomber: 3/3 Jet fighter destroyed
Stealth Bomber: 3/3 Jet fighter -> 1/3

We failed to kill any citizens :(. Damn planes! Time for the armies to kill what we can:

16/16 modern armor army (15/16 after defensive bombard) vs. 4/4 modern armor -> 14/16 modern armor army
16/16 modern armor army (defensive bombard missed) vs. 4/4 modern armor -> 11/16 modern armor army
16/20 modern armor army vs. 4/4 modern armor -> 15/20 modern armor army
15/17 modern armor army vs. 4/4 modern armor -> 14/17 modern armor army

10/17 marine army vs. 4/4 marine -> 10/15 marine army
4/4 marine vs. 3/3 Mobile SAM -> ¾ marine

7 workers captured – there are 5 Saber workers and 2 Council workers. We will save one of the Saber ones, but we have to disband the rest.

During destroyer recon, we locate a sub S-SW of The New Yard:

Destroyer: 4/4 nuclear sub -> 2/4
Destroyer: 2/4 nuclear sub -> ¼
5/5 destroyer vs. ¼ nuclear sub -> 5/5 destroyer

The New Yard is undefended! We have 2 transports in range, but they are both empty :wallbash:. So much for the assumption that Council would see us coming… I guess they moved all their planes to The Chamber and are no longer doing recon. We will return with marines in 2 turns. The Nursery is also defenseless. It is nice that Council destroyed Magellan’s so our sub scouts don’t have to travel quite as far.

I forgot to use our stealth fighters so we take 2 more shots at The Chamber:

Stealth Fighter: ¾ jet fighter -> 2/4
Stealth Fighter: ¾ jet fighter -> 2/4

That was useful…

No more planes in The Chamber, recon The Igloo since that is the next city to reach 640:

They don’t have their forests railed, so it will only take 1 bomb to crater each of them, but we will start with the easy food.
Tile bombing (4 bombers, 8 stealth bombers, 1 stealth fighter):

North of The Igloo: road destroyed; cratered
NW-NW of The Igloo: road destroyed; cratered

Unit Moves:

Spoiler :

Recon, recon, recon. I’m so bored with this part :sleep:. We find 1 privateer 3NW of The Hideaway, but we have nothing in the area to use to sink it.

Slide a destroyer up toward The Nursery to see if it is empty. It is not. There is a 4/4 modern army in there. It is possible that Council has a unit in all coastal towns but didn’t see us coming, so they only have the one. Try to bombard with the destroyer.

The Nursery:

Destroyer: Miss.
Destroyer: Miss.
Destroyer: 4/4 modern armor -> 2/4.

Another undamaged modern armor appears on top. Crap. So much for that plan. I suppose we go back to bombing. Recon The Gulag:

The fact that they don’t have units guarding their tiles seems to be another argument in favor of thinking they saw our transports if there had been any doubt. I decide to go back to hitting tiles.

2 bombers and 28 stealth bombers do the following damage:

East of the Gulag – rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
North of The Treasury – rails, road, irrigation destroyed; cratered.
N-NE of The Gulag - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
N-NW of The Gulag - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
N-W of The Gulag - rails, road, irrigation destroyed; cratered.

There is no way the Gulag has enough food for 9 citizens. The only other place we care about much at all is The Silo, so we recon first, but apparently I forgot to take a picture of it.

Again, no tiles defended. We start with the tiles that only The Silo can be working:

SW of The Silo - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.

The Silo is already in negative fpt.

W of The Silo - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
N-NW of The Silo - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
SE of The Silo - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
NW of The Silo - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
E of The Silo - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.
E-NE of The Silo - rails, road, mine destroyed; cratered.

I think Council is pretty much done. I move our carriers to where the stealth bombers could reach Freedom Central next turn if we want (more on that later).

6 miss.
