Hello.

I had no ivory but I wanted the Statue of Zeus. So I traded ivory from the (stupid) Russians, who were trying to build it themselves... Although the trade agreement ended before I had completed the Statue, I was able to go on building it. Alas! To my great dismay I discovered that it didn't produce any ancient cavalry, even after dozens of turns. Do these guys use ivory swords? :crazyeye:

You still need Ivory for the Statue of Zeus to produce the ancient cavalry.

You could think of it that way. You need Ivory hooked up for the SoZ to spit out Ancient Cavalry every five turns.

What's your question?

Their swords are bronze and iron, like regular swords
THe ivory to to build the statue.
The reason you could build it is when you build anything that requires a rescource, the first thing they do is get all the rescources they need to finish.
As for why the Cavalry show up, you need an Ivory hookup. :p

My question was of course ironical... Needing ivory to make cavalry is IMHO one of those numerous oddities that Civ3 contains and add to its charm... Although I find it hard to admit that I spend 200 resources just for some culture and the remote perspective of making a few coins 1,000 years later...

Just buy ivory again, build 20 turns worth of Ancient Cav, and declare war on the Russians, taking their ivory.

20 turns of Ivory only gets you 4 cavalry.
You won't get that much of Russia, assuming you have a weak military.

You have to actually build other units, just use the cav for support.

Maybe the Russians have not been so stupid has you though...
Yes, you're right, it was a clever move from them: they gave me the opportunity to waste 200 shields on an almost useless wonder. :)

You could have wasted 200 shields on defenders slaughtered by Russia's ancient cav. You're situation is not ideal, but it's not a total waste.
