Steal Tech ... seems useless

Randy, that sounds like a very sensible use of the Steal tech feature. The outcome of the game depends on it, so go for broke.

We play at lunch every work day. And the best part is my coworker does not know how I pulled off the win, so I may get away with it again someday! :mischief:

@Khshayarsha - the strategies of Emperor / Diety hold true for Regent / Monarch too. A key to getting on top in the tech race is often to stop researching altogether to get lots of cash and buy key techs from the AI to trade for other techs from other AI. In this situation, you have a load of cash, ready to buy but the AI won't sell - well steal!

And as far as your gang pile goes - have you broken alliances with folks? Avoid breaking the 20 turn alliances if at all possible - make sure you go into the Active screen in the diplomacy screen before you declare wars and cancel any active treaties. And as mentioned, if you are weaker than everyone else, they'll surely jump on you. If you notice that you are weaker (F3), sign some MPPs with your neighbors. Best to always have a couple very friendly neighbors who you can quickly sign an MA with when times get tough.

Cheers!

Oddible, good advice, but in the last game it was an MPP crossed with ROP that got me into terminal trouble. First of all, half the starting civs had been eliminated and we were down to only 4 including me. I shared the middle of a continent with English to the east and Russians to the northwest. The Mongols completely owned the other continent. I had signed MPP with the English because the Mongols attacked me. I had ROP with both the English and the Russians because I wanted friendly neighbors. You can see where this is heading. One turn before the MPP was due to expire, the English attacked the Russians. That forced me into a war. After that my rep was permanently shot. Even though I had nobody inside Russian territory when I was forced to declare war, and they invaded me. No, I was held to blame. Tricky business, diplomacy.
