I think that you should be able to have a chance (albeit a very small chance) of learning a tech from defeated enemy units that are more advanced than you. I go to school in Huntsville Alabama and there is atleast one company there that does Reverse Engineering (Taking apart enemy military hardware that was captured to see how it works or see how to make it not work in combat :D ). I think that would be a good Idea to impliment in Civ4. What do you think? Please forgive me if this has already been discussed. (and if so please point me to the thread)

I like this idea. Though the reverse engineering you speak is a fairly modern thing, I suppose that back in the day, if you defeated a knight with armour on a horse, you might get the bright idea of doing the same thing.

Make it a small chance (like you said) in ancient times, then possibly include a tech or a small wonder in the industrial era that improves the chances.

I like this idea also. I certainly didn't like the "Horde of Natashas" in Civ II- loads of spies stealing every new tech, but I do like the idea that you've presented here.
