Still skeptical, but now a Little Hopeful

The news that has been coming out lately about civ has been both disappointing and overwhelming. As some of you may remember, I posted my worries about the direction that Civ V was heading a couple weeks ago. With the information that has come out since then, and after having time to reflect a bit, I can say that while I am still not welcoming Civ V with open arms (given what little we still know at this point), I have settled and I am now hopeful with the potential.

I am still not certain about the whole one-unit-per-tile thing. One of my greatest concerns has been the defense of cities, but that has since been answered by the representatives stating that cities now have hit points. That calms that issue, though does not resolve my total skepticism with the OUPT gameplay. I am still concerned with the micromanagement issue that is bound to arise. The answer seems to be to limit the number of units that the player has (through various penalties and such). While that may be fine in helping maintain engine stability (though it may not if the units are all spread out), I feel that it is taking away from the idea of Civ and also causes other issues. For example, if you are limited by the number of units that you can have available, then how do you fight a multi-front war? Let's face it, no matter what your strategy is, you eventually end up in that situation. If they limit that, then, to me, that would be taking away a core part of Civilization. I definitely need some answers on this!

I am also still disappointed in the fact that they took away religions and espionage instead of fixing (or improving) them. My only hope now remains in the modding capability of the game. The news of the external map editor is promising, and rumors of a game and scenario editor are promising for those of us who don't have the advanced experience of coding and scripting (or patience for it). And I also hope that advanced modders will not have any problems with the advanced tools in adding the stripped features back in.

Whatever the case, I have heard enough talk and I am tired of looking at screenshots. It is at the point that Firaxis/Take Two need to just show the game in action. I understand that any demo that they can put together could be changed (especially interface) by the final version. I just want to get a better idea of what is to come. I want to see it in action. I am tired of second hand accounts by editors from some big publication who are rarely in tune with the fan base for the game anyway. About the only exception that I know of might be Steve Butts from IGN, but his account of the gameplay is still not enough. In fact, even if somebody from the fansites or Polycast got a chance to play it and give us their account, it would still not be enough. I need to see it in action for myself. I can wait a few months for a playable demo, but I want to see some gameplay video now... to be blunt about it. I want to see how unit management works. I want to see these animated (and vocal) leaderheads that they keep touting in there press releases and interviews. Just throw a little something together to show us and notate that it is pre alpha (or alpha) build. We will understand that...

There is just too much of a fight going on in the core Civ communitiy for us to be left hanging like this. A couple minutes worth of footage is all we really need. Actual gameplay, mind you, not cut scenes). And, if you want to be really nice, please throw in some screenshots of the modding tools (editors) at least. Video is not needed for those, but it would be nice to see what they look like.

Yeah, but it can be a double edged sword if they lead us along and don't give us anything soon. Otherwise, I (and I am sure others) would come to the conclusion that they are not making Civ V for us and will decide to skip it.

at the end of all this talk, and assumptions and speculations, the same result will play out, on release day we will all go out and but civ V no matter what... its been written in history...

I reckon Thorburne has a point - with the Civ fanbase being so hugely fanatical, there is a danger that the game makers can get burnt if they don't handle the fans properly - we need more than we already have been given, otherwise we might (in our state of heightened interest and fervour) tip over the edge and start giving up on Civ5 before there's enough in the p.d. to keep us hooked until release day. With such a long lead-in time to release, we need more tidbits more frequently.

Not necessarily... I may stick with Civ IV if I am not impressed with Civ V. They need to convince me if they want my money.

Your entire post can be explained by looking at this section:

And here is how I read it along with many others around here:

You: OMG OMG OMG, THEY ARE IMPLEMENTING SOMETHING BROKEN WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT AND IT WILL BE TERRIBLE BECAUSE WE ARE ASSUMING THEY HAVE NOT THOUGHT ABOUT IT AND IMPLEMENTED THESE EXACT THINGS TO FIX IT!!!

Them: We have added city defence and hit points to accommodate the new style of combat.

You: I concede you thought about this 1 issue but... WHAT ABOUT ALL THESE OTHER ISSUES YOU HAVE ONLY GIVEN US LITTLE SPOILERS ON!! ITS CLEAR THEY ARE NOT THINKING ABOUT THEM!!

/rant

I think its pretty safe to assure that they are thinking about everything thats been mentioned on here and its just silly to say otherwise unless they have clearly stated they won't be doing something.

And regarding religion, is it even stated that religion is not in the game? It was said that religion is not what it is in Civ4 but they didn't say it was completely omitted.

First, to touch on the religion aspect, yes, I did consider that statement when the news first came out. It may still be in there in some form, but I still have to see. Regardless, other articles that have come out since (IGN, Gamespot, etc) seem to indicate that it has been removed as a whole.

To your reaction to my "rant"... well, yes, it is a rant. Everything that they have put out seems to indicate and reference Jon Schafer's inspiratin from Panzer General and concentration on 19th century warfare and diplomacy. What nobody seems to realize is that Panzer General is NOT Civilization! Just because it is turn-based, it does not mean that they are the same game. The scope of both games are completely different. And if they want me to buy into their promises that it will work, well, I need to see proof. As the saying goes, "The proof is in the pudding" and I am to the point where hearing about the pudding is not enough... in fact, it is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I want... no, I need to see it first hand and then get a little taste. As fingers pointed out, we have a long way to go until release, and vague clues and promises of a great game are not enough. I should be anxiously awaiting at this point, but instead I am worried about the next installment of the franchise that I love so much.

You say that I should hold faith in the developers that everything will be hunky-dory! Well, I have done that before and been burned. Remember SimCity? It was ruined when they decided to change things up and take it into a different direction. (and attempts to recreate the original feel have fallen flat, IMHO... that means you, CitiesXL). Don't get me wrong, change is good... but I would have preferred evolutionary change, instead of formula. Basically, to sum up my thoughts, until I see hard proof that the new system actually works, I vote NO to Civilization Reform!

Thorburne, Panzer General's influence is on a single aspect of Civ: combat.

If you want proof, wait for the demo. If you can't wait, take your rant elsewhere. Some of us have useless Civilisation speculation and arguments about Poland to go on with. This forum's already full. :D

Jeez, someone open a window....

Haha, yeah right. They could not release another detail until launch day and you'd still be there frothing at the mouth.

The people on Civfanatics may be fanatical but don't kid yourself, the vast majority of Civ players have never even heard of this site.

Designing any game according to the fickle whims of an internet forum is asking for trouble. Most people around here are not game designers and really have no idea what they want, other than "more Civ".

What's the rush for information about the game, do you need to make a decision now about whether you think you will like the game?

About multi-front wars:

1. Your enemies will have fewer units as well, so you can probably still fight on multiple fronts

2. Since units mostly get injured/damaged rather than die, this would mean you need fewer units to fight the wars than in Civ 4

Yeah. I can certainly wait. I'd be nice to get some new info and screen shots every week though so we can analyze that. That's part of the fun I think. :D

Obviously you're not a fan of Blizzard titles. I dare say that Diablo fans are just as, if not more, fanatical than civ fans. They've been waiting for 2 years now since the announcement of Diablo 3, and they continue to wait.

Nobody is going to give up on Civ 5 because of a lack of released content. You might lose interest for a while in the months leading to it's release, but the day you look up and realize it's only 2 weeks until release, you'll begin to count sick days and plot the disappearance of your family for a few days all in anticipation of playing the game.

No kidding. I have been waiting for Diablo 3 for what seems like eons. Torchlight is super fun though as a Diablo lite hackfest. :D

As far as ciV goes, try a new game so you don't think as much about ciV. Or play an old one. I'm going to fire up Rise of Nations again. ^^

i must say the news that both religion and espionage will not be a feature in Civ5, makes me very unhappy, the chance that we get a sort of dumb revolutions clone worries me no end. i will need a lot of convincing that this Civ5 will be better or even as good as we have become to expect from this series i own and played all versions since 2, and although i was excited and happy Civ5 was anounced, what i did read and see after, worries me no end.:cry::cry::cry::cry:

I bought Diablo 2+ expansion recently because of all the good reviews about it. I tried it for about 15 mins appalled about the horrible graphics and repetitive combat. :cringe: Does it getter better further into the game or is this what you call enjoyable??

I'm starting to think that Firaxis needs to make two versions of Civ V. They can release the version they've spent two years working on, with all the "controversial" gameplay changes and new features and stuff, and then they can make a special version for people like Thorburne that's just Civ IV with hexagons. Everyone's happy!
