I gambled sending a settler across the ocean, and it got snatched up by a barb caravel. I sent an ironclad over there and it dealt with what I think was the same caravel, but no sign of the settler/

Has anyone observed what barbarized settlers do in these situations? On land, they might go back to camp and just wander about a bit once the camp is gone. On the ocean, would they go to land and seek out a camp, or would they just faff about on the ocean?

Sometimes workers and settlers disappear when captured on water. No idea if there are discernable rules. So your settler might not exist any more.

This is something that I've noticed too; did you see that the settler was actually converted?
Alternatively, it might not have been those barbs, or another civ beat you to it.
Or maybe a kraken got it...

I have a similar question to this one...why do I see barbs and city states with settlers? They don't create any/more cities do they? I play King level and I have never seen a barb or city state start a new city? Am I just missing it? Do they at higher levels est cities?

They captured that settler from an AI civ. Never seen a city-state do it, but I reckon it would just putter about.

I recall in Civ V, captured settlers would just turn into workers. I rather prefer that.

I got the standard notification about a unit being captured. I didn't see anything happen. Kinda forgot about it.

City States can't found a second city and barbs can't found any cities. They can capture settlers from major civs, however. Also, if the map settings make the map overcrowded, sometimes a city state will not actually found its only city, and the settler it starts with can be captured.

City states that capture settlers usually sit them in their capital. Barb-captured settlers seems to wander.

I have noticed recently (like in the last patch or two) my captured settlers disappearing. I recently had this happen, I actually had a caravel on auto explore not too far away, I got over there in a couple turns, settler was gone. I even purchased a caravel from the other side and came in from both directions to prevent escape.

Serves me right for using unescorted settlers. It's funny, we criticize the AI for doing this, but we often do it ourselves.

I haven't ever noticed a settler disappearing, but barbarians (or free states / rebel cities) can and do capture your own civs settlers as well as those of AI civs. Those settlers become 'barbarian' and can in turn be captured by city states or other civs, and whether you notice or not you'll only be able to recover them if you go to war against the city state or AI civ (provided the AI civ doesn't found a city with the settler in question).
