I was playing Civilization V. I was feeling good and upped the difficulty. I was doing good for the first couple hours and then everything went to hell.
I started out as the Chinese in North-West Africa. I settled there and built up a nice city, fighting off barbarians in the early ages. I extended downward and to the East. In the South I extended almost completely to the end except the tip was occupied by Bucharest. They were fairly peaceful so they did not have much problem from my empire. In the West I met with Venice and right from the start i knew this wasn't going to end well for them.
After claiming all of Africa except Egypt (where Venice was) and South Africa (where Bucharest was) things with Venice went downhill and war broke out. They quickly fell and this gave me access to the middle East, where Persia occupied mostly all of it. Persia was outraged by my attacked on Venice, they were possibly allies. I still had a huge army since Venice put up no fight and marched it directly into Persian territory.
On the other side of Persia was India and they have been battling on and off now for quite some time it seemed like. After marching my troops past persia's great wall India quickly requested an alliance and we flanked him from both sides and Persia fell. I got most of the land so now I had almost all of Africa and the middle East extending down and over to where India would be.
I was proud of my Empire and things were going great, we were prosperous and I had an ally and still a powerful army.
Above me was Russia and they didnt seem to powerful. India and Russia were not getting along so I massed my units ready for an invasion from the Middle East. Alas, India declared war on Russia and Russia declared war on me as well. This is where things took a turn for the worst for my empire. I had everything and I underestimated Russia. They stormed down with a massive army that will haunt me for nights to come...
Russia poured into the middle East and I held them off for a while, but their army was too big and they launched a second invasion from the Mediterranean and claimed all my cities in Northern Africa, nearing my capitol. I quickly retreated my forces to my capitol to defend it. They got there and I won back most of northern Africa, but lost all of the middle east. I now was hurting for land and my empire was cut in two (I still held a eastern part of the middle east). If Russia kept advancing I was done unless my Indian ally saved me. Fortunately Russia offered me a peace treaty and India was pressing on them from the east.
I took advantage of the peace treaty and tried to fix everything, i was running out of space and wouldn't dare attack Russia or my ally, so i turned to Southern Africa. I gathered my army and sent 2/3 of them there to get ready to attack.
Thats when I felt a stab in my back. India had broken our alliance and attacked me... My one ally had betrayed me and with most of my army now at the farthest point I quickly lost everything East of Africa. india is now advancing towards me and the treaty with Russia is nearing end. Russia send me peace-time threats and india laughs at me when discussing peace. My Empire is quickly coming to an end and India's military will surely overpower mine not to mention Russia will most likely join in too...
I left off in about the 1700's and my peace treaty with Russia is about another 150 years long. I decide to take advantage and cut my losses, cutting all supplies and reinforcements I have going to my remaining territory in Eastern Middle East (more like Southern Asia). The territory quickly fell without any support to India. My scouts watch as India moves Westward towards Africa.
My hope is that India will meet with Russia enroute and buy me some time. And with luck this is exactly what happens and Russia's military is massive and easily takes on India's. Now I have had a political focus on scientific development throughout my empire's history and i kicked this into overdrive over the next 100 years. I built walls, fortresses and set up my technological superior artillery cannons slightly behind borders. As time ran out I tried last minute peace talks with Russia to no avail and I gathered all fighting forces I could.
The year was almost 1900 and the treaty expired. Almost immediately Russia says "We were destined to be enemies by fate" and a Blitzkrieg was launched and right away 3 cities fell to Russia. My inferior foot soldiers were being slaughtered by Russian forces, but I had my artillery to rely on. The artillery shells blasted through Russian forces and gave me hope.
Unfortunately Russia is smart and brought in a wave of calvary and attacked up close to my artillery which is not very effective at close range.
More cities fell, but my people are fighting a good fight and my hope is that if I can hold them off long enough I can use my advanced technology to counter-attack. If I can hold off until I develop tanks ect. then I stand a fighting chance against Russia.
