I know they are out of print, but which guide books are the best ones? I've heard there were two (not counting the manual.)

I'd like one that had charts in it, too.

I recommend: Civilization or Rome on 640K a day

I also wrote a strategy guide a couple of years ago that I can send to you if you want for free (html).

There is a plain text one called the "Civilization 1 FAQ" which is about 5 years old which you may find handy as well.

If you want charts, check out the Civilization 1 reference section of this site.

:)

Thanks, TTG. I have located a used copy of Rome on 640K a Day at a bookstore online.

In the meantime, I would love to have your strategy guide.

I have just sent you an email requesting it.

Thanks again.

There is something about Civ1 that has a simplicity and a magic about it. I can already feel that magic, even though I haven't learned to play very well.

I'm one of those people who loves the first Age of Empires, even though the Age of Kings, etc may have "bigger and better" things. There is magic in that first game, too.

Thanks again.

Ugh, i wrote this reply before looking at the post dates!
Thanks Swedishguy.

Well, here's a short review of 3 guides for anyone interested:

I bought these 3 guides at the end of last year from amazon
"Rome on 640k" $0.35
Definitely the best, a great reference and in-depth guide. - lots of charts and tables.
"official guide to Sid Meier's CIV" - Ferrell $0.01
Very wordy, great for strategy, and explaining how to play. - lacking in the charts.
"Civnet, official secrets and solutions" - Caspian-Kaufman $2.91
The most recent! If civnet is what you play, this is worth getting. - some of the charts from 640k are reprinted, but it doesn't look like they included them all

A lot of the stuff in all the books is common knowledge, and common sense, but there has been things in all 3 books that i hadn't known previously.
Btw: the civnet book doesn't mention that SDI defense doesn't work.

why would one SELL those things? They might as well put them online for free.
