I don't think you'll have ANY memento's in your first game... they're acquired through playing games with the leaders, so it'll take at least until the second game to get one

Really Embarrassed myself there. Does that mean the game gets easier every time you play it? Once you've beaten Deity, it continues to get easier as you get more mementos?
I expect mementos will be more or less balanced. the idea is not to give you progressively more powerful mementos, but to give you more toys to play with
You may get more and more mementos over many games BUT each game start, you can only choice 2 out of many your earned. You have to choose the most suitable mementos for the leader and civilization that you will be playing with. It’s just an additional leader/civilization traits.
It won't be for the first game obviously but I see the level 9 memento from Trung Trac is that declaring war against another civilization grants a Celebration. I would expect that memento to see very heavy usage once unlocked.

Would be nice if there were negative mementos, so that you could try games with specific handicaps. Because increasing the game difficulty "just" gives increased yields and attack power to the AI. Having negative mementos such as "building a settler double the food cost of the next population" or "finishing a technology give you a cummulative -1% culture yield" would be somrthing fun to add.
