Stupid Naval warfare

Sealman, when you say displacement, I assume you are referring to weight of ship in tons. I have each displacement listed with first standard and then full. I have it listed right between the beam dimension and the speed.

Another note I forgot to add, the Iowa's had far superior firecontrol radar than the Yamato or Bismarck. Which would result in more accurately placed hits.

I also read someone's post about the turret exploding on the New Jersey while she was stationed off Beirut. Not correct. The USS New Jersey was stationed off Beirut in the early 1980s...either '83 or '84, but it did not have a turret explode. The USS Iowa was the battleship that had the #2 turret explode during a demonstration of the 16" guns. The real cause is still somewhat undecided, but I should note, part of the blame should go to the captain at the time.He was a "missile man", and did not appreciate the power of the big guns. He did not run drills or safety checks as much as he should have concerning the 16" guns. Too much to type about that inccident.

Displacement refers to the the amount of water is displaced when the ship is launched, it could be refered to as weight in some descriptions. Missed the reference. Thanks

Your are right about the Iowa had the explosion not the New Jersey, can't recall who said what and I may have gotten confused since I could not for the life of me remember the New Jerseys name.

That was me! Oops. You are correct. I was relying on my memory, always a bad idea in my case.

Hey guys, I'm not trying to be a "smarty-pants" here. I just want to correct any historical/tecnical inaccuracies. I do know alot about battleships, especially the Iowas, but I don't know everything. Just trying to share information on one of my favorite subjects, that's all.

Well, I still have the plastic model I built of the Missouri in 1959. I have always loved the BB, just never got stationed on one.:o \

The turret incident is still an open question, AFAIK. JAG (tv show) picked up on it and ran their version of a trial based on that, for what that is worth.
