I've seen a similar problem in another thread, but no explaination or anything so I figured I'd ask directly.

I'm having a bit of a problem when running CivIV. The game starts up fine, runs fine, but after a while the whole screen pixellates and alt-tabbing is impossible. I end up having to just restart my system. I was wondering if this is part of the memory-leak issue that everyone seems to be having a problem with?

[System Specs]
Abit Ai7 w/ P4 2.53 o/c ~2.74ghz
1gig PC2700
Nvidia 6800GT/OC

I don't think it's a hardware related issue.

Sounds like a video card heat issue.

Well, I've got the exact same problem. My system is not overclocked. Right now at least... ;)

But it could be a Geforce 6800(GT) problem.

My Rig:

Asus K8N Nforce3
AMD 3000 A64
1 GB PC3200
POV Geforce 6800GT

I'm beginning to believe it to be a GeForce 6800 GT problem. I have that videocard and it happens to me and it drives me crazy!!! :crazyeye:

I have twin GEForce7800 GTx' 256mb in SLI mode and CIV IV with patch and memory fix lasts about 20mins before it overheats my machine/grfix cards and it shuts down. slight smell of burning too. I wouldn't recommend that anyone with advanced nvidia graphics play this game, no other application has this effect on my box !!!

I've got a Nvidia 6800GT installed in my PC, I was having the same problems, underclocking the card as reduced the temperature enough so the game is now stable.

6800GT user checking in. I have had none of the pixellation problems that have been described here. I did have CTD problems until I installed the Harkonnen patch, since then my game has ran perfect.

So can we assume that underclocking our 6800 GTs will fix this problem? Has anybody tried it?

I did not have to underclock my 6800GT. I just installed the Harkonnen patch and the game has been rock solid since.

I have an e-VGA 6800GT that came slightly overclocked out of the box. I manually clocked it at 350MHz GPU and 1GHz memory (standard speeds) using coolbits a while ago because of problems with other games. I have no problems with crashes, but I do have a strange horizontal banding problem in world view, which I can alt+tab out of to get it to work for a turn or two.

I got the exact same problem with my 6800 GT card. I finally convinced Civ IV to run without too many crashes by manually turning AA, Ani filters etc. off. That drastically reduced the number of crashes.

Then my monitor died on me, and I had to buy a new one. Now, for some inexplicable reason I'm back to the same old crashes, and the game has become unplayable.

Regarding heat: I ran Civ IV in windowed mode to constantly monitor my GPU temperature. Heat wasn't an issue in the crash that came.
