If I capture a size 1 town and a size 2 town will that be enough damage to compel the AI to pay gpt for peace? If not, how much damage is usually required to get gpt?

In my experience, it will depend on what portion of their territory that represents. So if they have 100 cities left, they probably won't care too much. If you just swiped their core, they will. I also think military strength plays into it, so that if they think they'll win the war anyway, they might not take peace with you.

It will probably depend on other things, too, like attitude and reputation.

if you take most of their resource cities then they are likely to want peace since they have to downgrade to older units

Also, they will NEVER pay gpt unless they actually have some positive gold income at the moment- they will never give more gpt than they are making, and they will not lower their sliders to accommodate to you

The AI only gives gpt if they have it unless you demand it and they're significantly weaker than you are. (You can get their whole empire's gpt for quite a while that way. It's actually good milking since they have lower corruption than you'd have if you had seized their last town.)

i'm not so sure about that

in my game as the english egypt went to war with me, i had just gone through a rapid expansion, MANY undefended cities, they had one city at the top fo my island, i over comitted to taking it, leaving my core undefended, believing that my navy was strong enough to stop any ships getting through, but they managed to sneak a galleon full of cavs through, they could have taken my capital and two of my best cities the next turn, but i asked for peace(no way was i giving them anything for it) they accepted the offer one turn before they would have crippled me

dumbasses

Actually, it's possible that the AI only calculates OVERALL strength when it comes to judging forces when attempting to make peace. A Galleon of Cavs won't make much of a difference in AI calculations even if they're sitting at the gates of your undefended capital because I suspect that the AI isn't a very good judge of TACTICAL strength.

The AI probably doesn't think, "OK, I can do this much with these few units in X turns". It just thinks, "I've lost half my men already and now I'm outnumbered 3 to 1".

my military was weak compared to them according to the advisor, but i think that the game might use territory in calculating power as well, thats the only thing i can imagine would cause them to decide to accept peace

It seems that it helps to have troops in their territory wich threaten their cities.
