Just wondering what options you guys would suggest for a "novice" player.

I am speaking of the options when you first start up the game and click the "Options" menu, not the game settings for each individual map.

um... well.. er... um...

i like to play with the video settings as close to max as i can get. and sometimes i have the audio all at 100. sometimes i turn the music to 0 and listen to my own (but i have to turn the media player's volume down between 10 and 33)

i don't remember the other stuff... i don't think there's much to do in those menus as i haven't used them in a long, long while. like since install

A little OT, but once you get your fill of the music, you can mute it and run your own music or web radio instead.

When starting a game, look into Advanced Options. You may want to turn quick combat on. I like it off (full combat animations), but a lot of people like it on. The option is, for some reason, only available when starting a new game.

Pangea means a single land, no need to build a navy. Quick game makes it go faster. Smaller worlds mean fewer opponents. Advanced, you can remove barbs.

First time I would play small, continents all standard.
Pick a leader or a civilization you like.

If you are new to turn based strategy start on settler, if you play strategy games in general you can start on warlord, and if you play other TBS games then start on Prince.

Make sure you have enough army, it's no fun getting killed first time you play.

Read the OP.
He means the Audio/Video options.

It really depends on your computer...

I'd leave audio alone to begin with...

If you have a quick computer, then you could try maximising the video, but, to be honest, to begin with, I'd leave it as you find it... later you can try other things...

I would turn on "Automated Workers do not replace improved tiles", but then again, I would never automate a worker in-game.
In fact all those settings are a bit what you want yourself.

If you have a really fast machine play on standard maps or larger. If you have a slower machine or an integrated video card play on small maps and add an AI or two. I have an integrated video card so all my settings are set to low and I turn shadows OFF. Audio options I don't mess with.

I'm running an ATI HD 6870 1GB Physical Memory, DXDIAG says 2.8GB

I can run Huge maps alright, chance to crash late game though, so I run one step smaller with 10 AI players and 20 city states.
