I felt that this is such a valuable and important suggestion that it should be in the General Discussion forum. If you disagree, feel free to move it.

I think that you should be able to defy all resolutions: AP and UN.

For regular resolutions, defying should remain the same as it is now.

For AP Religious Leader defiance, then you automatically start an endless war with all AP full members. If the leader no longer is a member, then the war can be stopped-negotiated. If the leader now becomes an AP member, then war is commenced. Until the defying party is eliminated, a religious leader cannot be elected.

For UN Diplomatic Leader defiance, then you automatically start an endless war with all UN members. This should be every leader in the world, unless it happens that another member has also defied the resolution, then you don't go to war with that leader. A diplomatic leader cannot be chosen until the defying party is eliminated.

Standard happiness penalties probably still apply.

Just some thoughts. They can be improved upon.

Isn't that how it worked in SMAC? When someone wins a Diplomatic Victory, you can say, "Screw you guys, it's time to die!"

I loved the SMAC diplomacy. I still remember whenever you finished off a civ their leader would go into that electric chair.

This sounds a lot like SMAC's UN-equivalent to me...in its version of a diplomatic victory, when a world leader was elected, that faction and those that voted for it had to eliminate all the dissenters to finally win the game. I'm not sure your idea would fit well into the UN system, since it's a different (and, IMO, worse) basis.

IMO, whoever designed the UN/AP in Civ4 needs to take a look at SMAC's diplo. They'd learn a lot.

Well Master of Orion did it before SMAC!
It was fun really, you could defy another's victory and get the "So be it! You will face the wrath of the New Order" message.

If nothing else, it could be interesting to allow the UN/AP leader to intiate a vote to declare war on the defying civs. However, I really do like the idea that a diplomatic victory only counts after a world war between the yes and the no sides.

Anything that adds an interesting finale to the Diplomatic system gets my vote! :D

At present, it is an anti-cilmax.... if this MoO/SMAC way was brought in, I'd probably aim for this victory every time as it would present a nice variety of goals throughout the game.
