hi guys, just trying to swap the harddrives round on my cousins computer, problem is there is only one slot so i cannot run them together...

by placing new one in (removing old one in process) i cannot get anything to happen.

i have WINDOWS Xp CD, but dont know how to make the "boot up" and install onto the new harddrive.

anyone got a clue?

Do you mean you don't know how to boot up from the CD?

If that's the case then you need to head into your BIOS (setup). Check the boot order (in there somewhere) and make sure CD is set before your hard drive (likely HDD0).

When you start up, the XP disk will say something like "Press any key to boot from CD", so just press the any key and you're away. ;)

basically ive removed old harddrive, plugged in new one. pressed "on" with windows xp cd in... got nowhere :)

erm..head into my bios? is that a keyboard function or does it jus happen...

When you turn it on look for a message like "Press DEL to enter setup" or something like that. That should take you into the BIOS (blue screen, menu). From there just enter the different sub-menus looking for the boot order.

You need to make sure it tries to boot from CD before the hard drive. Once you've done that, saved and exited, when you turn the computer on at some point you should get "Press any key to enter setup".

DEL works for most coputers but sometimes it's F1 F2 or INS. (Some Fujitsu Siemens computer for example) I just thought you might want to know it if DEL doesn't work.
