Stupid question - how do you swap the order of items in your production queue? Whenever I try and do it I always end up deleting things...

I may very well be wrong but I don't know that you can do this. I always just add something new to the order either with SHIFT or ALT keys or whatever they are, putting them at the top or bottom of the queue. Switching the order means I just delete and re-add them. it would be a nice interface convenience to just re-order.

no way to move an item, but shift and ctrl put the new item at the end or beginning. alt-newitem causes it to repeatbuild (* before item means its repeating). If you add something after a repeat, it will finish one of the repeat item, build the following item, then go back to repeating.

Also shift-alt-newitem will set it to the end of the list and on repeat.

I don't think that it is the number that I would be building, more how fast they are being built. After you get Heroic Epic set up in a good city it usually cranks out a unit every turn or so. Since that city gets every settled GG and it makes units the with the most efficiency it does nothing but build units. I usually set it up to make one or two units automatically until I can make something better.

indeed autobuilding units is very handy in multiplayer as it allow you to focus your attention on other things.

Why multiplayer? I always set my military production cities on autopilot to produce my most effective unit. You can alternate between two units (such as Axemen and Catapults) or even repeat the same unit to get a higher proportion of one type:
*Axeman
*Catapult
*Catapult

This will produce twice as many Catapults as Axemen. You can periodically throw in a non-repeating unit for emergencies or a building when it becomes available. This is one of the key features that reduces micromanagement.

What unit/situation would you want to build so many of a particular unit that you would set to repeat?

Um, always?

When I'm gearing up for war #1, my production city/cities are on Axeman repeat. Once I have plenty of axes and am ready to prepare for a period of peace, they go into Archer repeat. For war #2, it's usually repeat for a series of Axe/Mace, Cat, Cat, Archer/Longbow.

I even use it when I'm going into insane settler expansion. Repeat: Archer, Settler. Or when I'm spreading religion: Repeat missionary.

Saves so much time not having to choose a new build every couple turns.

Back to the original question, no way to simply change order. I really wish there was a drag and drop ordering, but Ctrl adds to the top, Shift adds to the bottom, and Alt (alone or in combo) is the repeat function. So if you want to put something in the middle, you have to delete whatever is below it, Shift-click, then replace what was below.

Also, remember that hammers are kept for partial builds for something like 10 turns, and begin to degrade after that. Very handy for when you're nearly done with a building but need a military unit quickly.
