I looked everywhere and havn't seen this problem mentioned. My computer acts like both Civ4 discs don't exist at all. The drive just spins and spins ad infinitum and nothing happens at all.

I checked the discs out on my laptop and it started up fine, but my laptop wont run the game so that's no solution. I had Alchohol installed so uninstalled that and removed the residual registry entries. Still dosnt work (although my laptop has Alchohol installed too and I was able to read the discs on there).

FYI, I have the CD version of the game (store didn't even recieve the DVD version) and the drive is a Toshiba DVD/RW. A friend has the same drive (we bought them at the same time not two months ago) which I also tried the game on, and it read the disc just fine.

Can someone give me some advice, I'm getting really fed up with the having the game on my desk and not being able to play/install/anything.

I have the same problem on my HP nc6000. It has a cd-rw drive on it. Cannot see the disc. Can see other cd's fine but for some reason cannot read the Civ 4 discs. Since I had purchased the game, I felt 'ok' to get the game by other means. Once I 'downloaded' it, I installed it but of course there's a problem. The intro is a blue screen and the first page is the globe with no menu. Sound is fine. Globe animation is fine including the sun rising.

I am going to try to install these drivers for my ATI 9600 mobile

For Nvidia laptops, go here:

I hope that helps...

Having to download a game you already legitimately purchased sounds like a pretty stupid workaround, but I don't have much of a choice I guess. Good job, Firaxis!
