Laptops as a college necessity are overrated. I thought I needed one, but really I only used it when I was in my dorm room. In retrospect I wish I spent the money on a good desktop...especially considering the motherboard ended up frying within 2 years.

In the classroom nothing will ever beat a good ol' #2 pencil and a notebook when it comes to note taking.

I didn't carry a computer notebook to my classes either when I was in college (a couple of decades ago, there were no tablets nor smart phones back then and so that would have been the only option if I had wanted something with me in class.)

A lot on college with regard to notebooks / desktops depends upon:

1. Did you want to have a direct LAN game that someone else was hosting (Quake, etc; that was when using phone modems would have been too slow)

2. Did you want to go home every weekend (and take your system back and forth)
