T&L - Is It Essential?

I played it last night on my Dell inspiron 6000. It only has the Intel integreted video card (No T&L Support). It worked fine, had no problems.

Perhaps someone can help me, then.
I have a HP, Intel card is something like 82845G(or something very similar), which does not support T&L. The game loads(however slowly with choppy sound).
I am able to select options, then the game loads. But it never gets past the "DONE" stage(and I mean I sat there for nearly 10 minutes waiting). If I then try to bring up the taskmanager to exit, the game gives me a message about the graphic driver(I tried taking a screen shot, but computer crashed at that point), and shuts down.
I have been afraid to try it again because of what it might do to my comp...

What should it do to your computer?
Seriously, don't worry, upgrade your driver and try again.
To do that search with Google for the card's name + driver, download, execute, reboot, enjoy.

I tried to upgrade the damned thing last week when I discovered what T&L was, but it said that I had the latest version.

Edit: I forgot to mention, when I exited game once, the computer didn't crash but when it sent me back to the desktop, everything was hugely magnified.

This is what it looks like without T&L.

hmm? is urs the 9XX chip or 8XX chip?

9XX has sofware T&L so maybe it can run...

Some people seem to think T&L is some sort of feature you can do without. That's just not true, the graphics of the game are supposed to be 'made' by your videocard. If you don't have T&L your CPU has to do the job and that thing just can't do that. That's because he has other things to do AND the job by the videocard is pretty hard. The videocard is a specialist in that kind of math, and remember, a graphic chip of a decent videocard is more complex than a cpu.

Civ4 does run without T&L, technically, but the result will be as in the above screenshots.

You will have:
1) Completely black terrain.
2) Non-working leader animations
3) Non-working minimap

You may also have:

Other black textures, missing fonts (no text) or complete refusal of the game to start.

Is that the case even if you have the intel intergrated 9xx series which suports software TL?

that's what I am trying to find out, too.

in the chat with firaxis trip did say he played on a comuter with intel intergrated graphics , saying it was a new system and i belive that the 9xx series is the newest out , so i belive it would work but no hard facts yet

The Intel integrated graphics chipsets don't support T&L. "Software T&L" is an euphemism for not having T&L. I don't have the game box to check what it says, but the requirements are a video card with hardware T&L support.

i thought however that no intel have hardware TL yet trip did say that he ran the game fine using the intergrated solution from intel, osi was wondering if it was the 9xx series which says it has software TL where as the other intel internal "cards" dont even say that

That's quite interesting. I can't see any mention on the Intel site of anything supporting T&L, though. Do you have a link?

what they should have done is what the makers of europa1400 gold did ,you had a choice to run it with t&L or without.

From the Q&A with Firaxians in the Chat Room thread:

[20:13] <+FIRAXIS_Trip> T&L... don't know personally

[20:13] <+FIRAXIS_Trip> I bought a new computer with integrated Intel
graphics and the game ran perfectly

It is all very strange, it seems like firaxis dont know what is needed to run there own game
