I've been playing as de Ruyter of the Dutch a lot lately almost entirely because of the Tactical trait. As much as I like the trait, I think it is too powerful. Specifically, that it allows you to upgrade units without having to pay any upgrade cost. In one of my previous games, I also had ridiculous spikes in military power (unfortunately I have no screenshots, it was before 1.24.1 so I don't have the save file). I think the best way to go about leveling the playing field would be to modify the tactical trait to allow reduced upgrade cost (maybe 50 or 25%).
Also the unit upgrade mechanic seems almost completely redundant to me. By the time a player has accumulated enough gold to upgrade their units, those units will already be close to becoming out of date.
In my opinion the upgrade costs should be reduced across the board. It just doesn't make sense to pay 80-120 gold to upgrade one unit. Perhaps linking the unit upgrade cost to the Standing Army Civic (or other civics) could be a cool idea. I play on a huge map size though, so maybe the upgrade costs make sense on smaller map sizes.
Any thoughts on this?
