take civ 4 back to the shops

Suffice to say that some people have never had any problems with the game, others have had problems that were corrected by the latest patch, and some have problems that persist. The unfortunate assumption made by all three groups is that the other two are a very small minority, as witness the person who started this thread.

Boneys26, I sympathize with your difficulties, but if you'll read the other threads in this forum, you'll find that quite a lot of people are quite happy with the product they purchased (barring annoying but minor issues needing a fix, such as the bare-bones Foreign Advisor). And as someone has pointed out, the warranty only applies to the hardware (the CD), not its contents. If you want to get angry at anybody, perhaps you should get angry at your game distribution chain, which makes enormous profits off both game producers and gamers, while refusing to accept back games that don't work as claimed even if uncopyable. Its those chains that refuse returns, when you could normally go into a video store, CD store, or most other kinds of stores and return opened merchandise.

Just a thought.

Ok guys heres my problems: But first system spec so you know it should run no problem;

Athlon xp 3000+ 2.2GHz
1GB pc3200 400 MHz ram
ATI radeon 9600pro 256mb onboard ram catalist driver v5:13 (latest) (AGP slot)
sound blaster live 5.1 (latest drivers)
windows xp home sp2 + updates

(and matte979 thanks. But i built it so i know if its my pc with the problem or not lol)

ok here it goes peeps i got the game found out i need a patch for it cuz i got a ATI graphics card. Fine got the v1.09 patch. Works ok but still problems slugish, the CDT's etc...... then got patch v1.52. Now I get "Not enough video memory. Please try to turn your settings down" Then after reading that I have to reboot because my pc won't do nothing. Now if that was the only problem it would be fine as i have turned on the memory saver that came with v1.52 turned the settings down and playing on smaller maps even trying not to move round too fast with the mouse. I'm now getting a CTD with error reports for microsoft. So if anyone knows how to fix my problem please tell me how. But no its not my card or pc I ran dxdiag all tests are good even try'd norton system works win doctor no problems found, I did how ever find a log in the game files after my last CDT if it helps

Oh and anyone who doesn't think they can take there game back as its not a fault with the disk its self, Your wrong, you can, If the game is faulty you can get a full refund. How do I no? I cheated I went to trading standards and asked. Those of you who have no problems, Nice one enjoy it from what i got to play it looks good lol

Every time I have graphics problems with a new game I go to the website for the graphics card and download the drivers for that card. This almost allways works. The graphics people are constantly updating the drivers to take care of the insane stuff the game developers are doing.

AMD 3400+, 1024Mb ram, 128Mb Radeon 9800Pro card, latest (5-13) driver:

"Not enough video memory" apparently.

try doing this it has worked on mine

my documents, my games, sid meiers civ4, then open the civ4 config settings (its the one with the notepad and cog) find memsaver=0 and change it to memsaver=1 or if its already saying memsaver=1 change it to memsaver=0 save and exit

now start the game but don't play go to options and turn your graphics settings down also mark the box so instead of you seing 3 units you just see the one (as it takes more to animate 3) then exit the game reboot ya pc it should work ok now

LOL boneys starts with a reason to take it back etc.. then posts how to correct the issues hes been getting etc.. which must imply you didnt take it back and if you did you copied it first.

Why post loads of jibberish no1 cares to read from the license agreement if you yourself dont bother to follow the advice.

I have not had one CTD with this game. This game works fine. I suspect you do not have minium requirments or a driver or hardware problem.

However, by all means take the game back if you can not get it work.

Not sure what to suggest. I'm running an AMD Athlon 64-proc 3.1 gHz, with 1 GB RAM and an ATI 9600 card, on Windows XP Home SP2. The videos stutter, but then, I always have ignored those in every game. Everything else loads and plays fine.

Is your BIOS updated?

One big proplem with buying games is you do not recieve legit reviews from game reviewers.I dont know rather its due to incompetence, or if they are recieving kickbacks from the company who products they are reviewing.
The bottom line is I do not buy games base upon reviews. It is unfortunate you can research software before buying an still not no what your buying.

yeah soon as i got the game and the problems started the first thing i done was to update every driver i could inc flashing bios.

and rguymon if you read my last post you will see i have above mim spec & above recomended spec for the game, no driver or hardware problems. I have tested all of my system looking for faults using Dxdiag, norton system works 2005's windoctor & diskdoctor also i have no spyware, addware, virus, etc.. I even turn off all programs before starting a game (like my broadband modem, antivirus, firewall, antispy, tracker, etc.... But still civi 4 would play up.

civalganjaman I fixed this problem if you read it again you will se i had many problems not just one..If it was just one or two problems i wouldn't have taken it back.

I think you're right, Boneys26. At this point, the game is not going to work for you, barring another official patch. You've got all the bases covered, and clearly know the proper software to check out problems, as well as the tips to remove TSRs that could complicate matters. I wish I could offer some other suggestions.
