Taking over a hostile city

When playing Civ2 I try to expand the empire as quickly as possible. To do this, I create settlers and build many cities. Furthermore I try to capture hostile cities by sending a attacking force to it. However, sometimes the city vanishes from the earth and sometimes it becomes mine. I don't seem to understand the underlying logic in this.

Does anyone know when a city is destroyed and when it is captured, with the use of a attacking unit.

Everytime you move a unit into an empty enemy city, it'll reduce the population of that city by one. So if you occupy an enemy city with population of one, that city will be destroyed.
Also if you successfully attk and destroy an enemy unit in an enemy city w/o city walls, the population there will be reduced by one too (if I remember correctly).

Assuming a city has no city walls, if you attack from a water square (like with an aircraft, ship, or marine), no population will be lost for a sucessful attack. Any successful attacks from a land square will reduce the population by one for each defending unit destroyed.

EDIT - typos.

Even if the city does have city walls, the pop is reduced by one if you take it over, even by inciting a revolt.

And the city will lose one pop if you pay double and subvert the city. Seems like subversion should keep the pop point, but noooo....

Some times it's just fun to reduce an enemie's enormous city to a smoking pile of rubble and then plough salt into the earth!!!! In repayment for all those past sneak attacks and snide diplomatic replies.

LOL, so true, but it is nice to capture a functioning enemy city too

. Now if we could actually make the enemy suffer and feel real pain for its transgressions!

Sometimes I take a city of 1 and it doesn't disapear.

Anybody can tell me why?

Also, sometimes it's nice to let an enemy...sorry, I mean "neighboring Civ"...build some of the extraneous Wonders - then capture their cities! Saves $$$.

I think what's happening is the city is increasing its population to 2 just as you capture it. This has happened to me a couple times. It's annoying when I'm trying to destroy it completely; you've worked hard to get it down to a population of 1 and you're poised to trash it - then suddenly the population bounces up to 2 just as you attack. Grrrrrrrr.
