Team research in MP games ?

Recently I play some LAN games with my friends, usually there are two of us n we play in the same team versus 6 other Emp/Imm AIs dividing into 3 other teams. My question is that should we both research one thing at a time or should we do the research individually ? I know this is quite a broad question but please help me with some ideas as my experience with Civ5 is limited atm

if you pool research, you reach target tech quicker, so is best if you can use the tech earlier - buildings, upgrades etc..., if you have no usage for the tech asap then is fine to split.

its just impossible that its better to have 2 delayed techs later than 1 single faster and then the second at the same time you would have both
