hey guys,

hope this question isnt one asked too often. Is there a current downloadable mod for Civ 5 that restricts you and AI players from advancing past certain tech era's?

I think era restricting option is most needed adjustment on game setup menu right now. It is last step of creating a game with a certain theme just like scenarios.

Without chosen period of time, realistic world maps and carefully selected civilizations means nothing and player cannot create a desired thematic effect on game.

Basically, I should be able to create a world with archaic civilizations on certain type of map at their original era which should end in medieval era without any modification.

very much agree Khagan, I was disappointed to find that it wasnt originally built into the options for the setup of the game.

I can see where that would cause you heartburn. I pored over the Mods section of the forum and I couldn't find anything that would enable the tech-to-era restriction. I did, however, find Grave's History in the Making mod.
I think that it comes closest to adding the feel that you're looking for.

I'm not sure how easy this is with ciV but civ iv you just had to edit the tech tree and increase the tech cost for techs leading to the next era by several multiples. the only downside to this would be that in civ iv at least, the ai would keep trying to research a tech that would take 99999999 turns to get while the human player would wisely just increase tax/luxury rate and have science rate to 0, giving an unfair advantage. war does seem to lose its flavour very quickly once gunpowder comes on the scene and it becomes one big slog fest of infantry pushed forward slowly with artillery/cannon killing everything in your path.

Yes, it was the first thing that I've discovered as a huge missing element after first look over game for me. :hmm:

This mod successfully adopt tech era restricting but it is a complete mod which adds a lot of new concepts to the game. My point was, it should be a game option not an extra modification.

Actually a human would research these with GS and RAs anyway :)

This is the problem with modding tech costs to restrict era progression.

To me, even on marathon, the classical and renaissance units disappear too quickly in favor of gunpowder units. Although the industrial/modern units are fun, they can get tedious.

A restriction on tech advancement is sorely missed.

Whatever mystery left in the world certainly comes to an end with the dawn of the industrial era. The age of discovery is all but over, the topography of the natural world ceases to pose a real challenge, and the sharp, metallic sounds of connecting swords and spears are replaced by the all too familiar (and dull) sounds of rifles, cannons and leather boots. The game dies with the Giant Death Robot, which, btw, is an absurd addition to the modern era.

Don't get me wrong, though. Love the game. But I wish the tech tree was longer and more comprehensive, and I wish there was a tech adv restriction.

I've yet to play a game that's lasted long enough to get to giant death robots. Once tanks are around, taking out the few remaining civs seems all too fast and easy. Most tedious eras for war are rifles/cannons and then infantry/artillery. Not a whole lot of room for tactics, just move your meat forward and shoot their meat from afar. Medieval and before is very fun tho.

I actually delayed a Domination victory so that I could build GDR's. They were fun to watch. :mischief:
