Tech pace in HOF games

As long as you researched the tech first, 10% instead of 100% doesn't matter. A forested grassland cow will make 3 shields per turn (a mined plains cow will also make 3 shields per turn). The AI doesn't prebuild. However, if a wonder gets finished by someone, and another AI was building that wonder, the other AI will switch to another wonder, if they have one available. E. G. Sumeria finishes the Temple of Artemis. Babylon was also trying to build the Temple of Artemis. So, Babylon switches its production to the Hanging Gardens. People usually refer to this by the term "cascade".

Ok, just wanted to make sure. Good to know, maybe I can take in those 3 turns... I have a cow and a wheat in my city radius, will plant a forest on that. Looks like we cross-posted, did you see the last sentences I edited into my post? Really learning a lot now, appreciate it Spoonwood! :)

They have a 90% production rate at Emperor. The cascade almost surely caused what happened there. If/when you start a new 20k at Emperor and don't gift techs up (or have better production), I think you'll snag both Cope's and Newton's and do better overall.

Aha, OK. Seems like I'm clocking in somewhere around 1830AD for my first try. My starting position really wasn't all that good, but I'm very happy that I played all the way through. I will do a lot things different the next time. You wouldn't be so kind to have a look at my save when I'm done? :)

How much should one develop the other cities in the empire? Let's say you have the 20k city and then 3-4 cities that grows up to 12 fairly easy and can continiue to grow. Then there's the 5-7 cities with pop 5-9. And there's some small one as well. I this game I quickly just set all the cities except the 20k city to produce wealth as that could make me research faster. However, some of the german cities were size 30+. None of my cities got above 15. Does this has anything to say? If I go for 20k does it make a difference wether I build courthouses, banks and police stations in other cities? I had worked every tile in my empire before setting production to wealth, by the way.

There are some things that involve luck like SGLs and to a lesser extent poped settlers, but there are other things that can improve your play without needing to rely on luck or exploits such as settler and worker factories, man management, good trading and tech choices which can improve your dates.

I think the best idea for now is ignore waiting for that early sgl but just try to improve your general gameplay, because then when you do get that early sgl you will be in a position to make good use of it.

The other cities each will need at least a market, library, and a university for research. Courthouses make sense in some cities and not in others. Banks could help, though generally speaking by the time you can build them, you can sell tech for gpt and probably want your tech slider to go at 100%. Other than your 20k site, you probably want somewhere between a CxxC and a CxxxC spacing in general, probably with a tendency towards a CxxC spacing in this game. I wouldn't have cities produce wealth until they have a market, library, and a university, you have enough workers (ideally you want enough workers to clean pollution in 1 turn from your forest/hills/mountain in your 20k city), and have enough military to spawn the heroic epic (artillery-type units can help) and repel all invaders.

Alright guys - will follow your advices. Just a quick question:Is it possible to download a save from th GOTM site and then play it, but with a different civ? How can I get the world seed for them for exampel? I just saw some very good starts there.

There is a program called seedbeast (I think) that will extract the world seed. you should be able to find it in the utility section.

GOTM maps you may not be able to do that, though - some of them are edited. HOF games you can recreate, though they may not have the exact same start if you pick a different civ or different opponents (because of seafaring civs, mainly)

Thanks mate. I'd like to recreate some starts - play, and then see how I stand up to the original save for training. See what I made wrong, build choices etc. I didn't know this option was in CA2 aswell, but it was. Gonna have a crack at your tiny emperor map! 1330AD is crazy. I'd like to improve my 1840AD win, my only 20K so far - that was on standard map though.

That start had at least an SGL for Pyramids (probably either for Masonry or Pottery, not sure) and probably at least one other in the AA.

A lot of the great 20K dates are highly luck dependent, for SGL's, for nearby ivory and for getting MGL's (for heroic epic)

Very difficult to recreate - try it with preserve random seed off, so you can try to get the early SGL...

Yes, but I will get no where your date for sure even if I get some leaders. Just going to play around as mentioned above and try to make the most of it! Maybe play as the Ottomans.

EDIT:Hmm... I've tried to regnerate the maps using the seed from CA2 but C3C never regenerates the same map. Maybe there's a difference between Conquests and C3C? I've tried with a lot of different saves. Oh well.

Also, if you use CivAssist II, you can:
  • Load the save
  • To to the World Map tab
  • Right click on a tile on the map
  • Click "Properties."
That will give you the seed number, landform, water %, and all the civs. If you put in the seed # and the AI civs in order (or is it just the seafaring?), you should get something very close to the original, with your new civ in the same starting place.

I never knew you could get the seed from Civ Assisst - that's great.

On the world map - yoiu have to have the same barb settings, the same water level, land type. And then, to get the same start, you may need the same opponents in the same order, I'm not sure.

You can always just download the games and try them.

Thanks Aabraxan. Looks like I have to abandon the idea of getting a good 20k date anyway. When I run Map Finder, after about 7 or 8 restarts - all the letters in the game are replaced by the word "NIL" and the program "encounters a problem" and terminates. Anyone experienced this? Annoying... I have C3C via Steam.

Yeah, same as me then... Oh well. Got an OK start anyway, archipalego - 80% water. I play as Byzantine again against the Mongols, The Zulus and the Arabs. Small map with 3 opponents. However, I share my island with the Arabs and they're going to war with me. They've got Longbows. In a 20k game, if you're beeing attacked - should I just kill their invasion force, or should I cripple them? I've got very little military, maybe 12 swords and some medieval infantery. But I can rush some knights if I want. As they're the only other scientific civ I might need them to trade with... Mongols and Zulus are two techs behind me. I can get them in on the war. In 880 I'm looking at a 1942 win.

The Arabs aren't scientific.

In a 20K game, once you go to war, continue until you get a leader for an army and a win for that army, as long as you are winning, so you can build the Heroic Epic. If they are attacking with longbows, that is a good situation for leader-fishing. If you want to continue after that, you can. On an archipelago map I'd prefer to own my whole island, so I'd probably wipe the Arabs out.
