I currently only have 512MB of RAM in my windows XP from like 2004....I was planning on getting like 1g more but how much do you think i need to run BTS efficiently?

512MB with XP is rather limiting, particularly for gaming. If you can bump that up to 1GB you should notice performance improvements in everything you do, especially gaming. 1GB should be enough for BTS/Civ...but...
If at all possible, I'd go for 2GB, which can give you a nice boosts (kinda depends on the rest of your system but RAM is often the cheapest way to get a bit more performance).
If you go for 2GB you'd probably want to make sure your motherboard can handle it (most likely it can) and see if it supports dual channel (most likely it does) and get a pair of 1GB sticks if it does. Something like:
(keeping in mind that there's lots of different RAM and RAM vendors and most people have their preferences - Corsair value has a good rep, good prices, and is generally good for motherboard compatability)
