Tell us why you rarely or never Submit GOTMs

Hmm... any volunteers for putting together such a list?:mischief:

There goes a strawman:

<<
1000BC stats: 2cities, 7pop, 2wor, 3War, 2Gal, 3WB, Set. Copper. 1Lux, 4health. 0GP, 1WW, 0NW. fpc=33-14-48, 29 sust bpt, 12cpt, 2GPPpt, 9g. 2Gra,2lh. 0Relig. 0/0 cottages used. 14Techs: Alpha, IW, Pott, AH, Myst. 0 civs killed. 4 hours.
>>

Get this kind of stats (maybe eliminate playing time) at 1000BC, 1AD, 1000AD (eliminate buildings built in 1000AD).

Add your intended VC.

Add a couple of key dates: Liberalism, the key early WW.

Add a couple of questions: what was your worst worry at 2000BC, 1AD, 500AD?

Et voilà!

Fair enough, but...

  1. What is "fpc"? "Food Per Citizen?" Taken from the city screen? 33 base food - 14 (2 food for each of the 7 pop), but then what is the "-48" ???
  2. Is "sust bpt" (sustainable beakers per turn?) also taken from the city screen -- adding up all the beakers-per-turn for each of your cities?
  3. cpt = culture per turn? Again, added up by counting the culture per turn for each city on the city screen?
  4. Are GPP (great person points per turn) simply added up for all of one's cities? Might that not be a bit misleading? Or is it just for the city with the next GP to pop?
  5. "g" = gold?
  6. "0/0 cottages used" -- what does this mean? Cottages used out of cottages built? Is there any distinction between cottages/hamlets/villages/towns?

EDIT: Also, given the spoiler thread guidelines, wouldn't 500 AD make more sense as a report date? Maybe, say, 1000 BC, 500 AD, and 1200 AD?

How many of my spoilers have you read? And you only ask now!

1.- The 3 first F9 stats, food, produccion and commerce (GNP) (with the slider as in 2).

2.- Sustainable beakers per turn. You (temporarily) move the slider to the closest point to having 0gpt. Then you look the upper left (or F2) and see how many beakers your civ is doing.

3.- Right.

4.- Right. Right, it is a bit misleading, maybe this number and the best city one should be provided.

5.- Right

6.- No distintion between cottages, towns, etc. 2/3 would mean that my workers have created 3 cottages but my cities are only working 2 of them at the moment.

Dates are open to discussion, of course. As anything else. Now, IMHO only 1000BC and 1AD data really matter, the rest is just "the endgame".

Something tells me that you already have a spreadsheet template that you use to record this information ... so why not post it for others to use?

(I've not formally tracked the in-game statistics to that detail (use more of a gestalt approach) while I play, but now you have me intrigued, so I would give it a try.)

If this template were available, you would then probably get a lot of spoilers in just the format you are looking for! ;) :D

I agree with this also! :agree:

Template? What do you mean? How would that look like?

I copy my previous notes over to a new sheet. Then, when I get to 1000BC, I overwrite what I have from the previous game with the info from the current game by going to F9, F1, each city, etc. My 'template' is the piece of text I've posted.

Ha! Well, let's see... For one thing, I don't normally keep my notes in this kind of "snapshot" format. It doesn't compare easily to the chronological "lists" I've been keeping until now, so after the self-explanatory parts I just skipped over the rest because I had no easy way to use the information without going back into one of my old autosaves and re-counting everything. Since others did not appear to be following suit with your format, I just let it go. Now, if a group of players is willing to report the same information for the same dates, I'm eager to cooperate, but I thought it might be a good idea to figure out what it all meant first! :crazyeye:

Target dates of 1000 BC and 0 AD work fine for me. Some other information I might like to see would be the date, type, and use of the first Great Person; the discovery date of certain techs (like Alphabet and Civil Service, for example); and a screenshot of the empire for at least the 1000 BC summary.

Is it possible to attach MSword or Excel documents to a post? I haven't tried it lately, but I thought CivFanatics limits the kinds of files we can use as attachments?

Almost sounds like something someone could write a mod to produce: a "generate spoiler summary" hotkey!

Just a response to the thread's premise; submitted my first GOTM (BOTM 16) recently. Since I haven't had a forum account until relatively recently in the scheme of things that obviously accounts for a lot of why I hadn't played games. And personally I'm less likely to play a game at a pretty low difficulty, say noble, without always war or something, where I don't feel there would be so much of a challenge.

One thing in general though is that I feel there are too many games for everyone to play all of them, including me, I think I'm having more fun with other things on CFC to find time for all the GOTMs; I'm probably only going to be playing/submitting BtS BOTMs rather than going back to the older versions of civ.

@Balthalion

Yes, .doc files can be attached. I'd prefer some kind of table inserting, as that could be read without double clicking anything. I've seen table sinserted, but I don't know how to do that

I'd be willing to cooperate and change to another format in order to get critical mass and be able to "force" others into sharing the key data. Your suggestions for additional parameters are very good (I should have think of them myself!).

How about this? It's in pdf format, but I'm happy to make changes or upload the doc file too. (Will update with a jpg scan too in a minute...) Done.

Looks nice. :)

If anything, I'd try to do it more compact. It would be nice if all 1000BC data fitted in a single line, to have one line for 1000BC, one for 1AD and maybe one for 1000AD.

In order to do that
- I'd reduce the units part to 2 squares: "number of military units" and "best unit type" (or the # one could also be #/#, where the first numbe is the # of units of the "best unit type" and the second the total number).
- Maybe the buildings part could be turned into a "free text" square called buildings. It might only be relevant for the 1000BC spoiler (?).
- The time played might not be of interest to other players, I'd take it away.

Also I'd change the "Tech:" column to "relevant dates", having only
Academy
Alphabet
CS
Liberalism
Oxford
Astro
Biology

How about this? The vertical format actually works better IMHO.

 Could you post that in a printable form such as .pdf? :please:
Ask and you shall receive! I made a couple of changes in this version, but nothing too significant. Will post the doc file here too in case others want to improve on the design or modify it for their own use.

Well, I just submitted my first BOTM since last summer. I just wasn't enjoying playing so I put my disks away and took a long break. I like the spoilers and comparisons to other games and I doubt I would have started playing again without them.
