some different types of terrain should have different effects or abilities which could affect your units in a good or bad way.for example. . .

Forests and jungle - unmounted units,guerilla units or units with zone of control should become invisible when in forest or jungle terrain.They could be hiding there and then jump out and attack the unsuspecting city.This should only work in forest or jungle though.

Tundra and desert - i don;t know if this is the best idea but maybe after a unit is in the desert or tundra for so long (about 10 turns), it should start to lose health because theyve been in harsh weather for so long (like 1 bar per turn) and not die right away like a jungle does to them.This should not be an effect if the unit is in a fortress or city.
 
just like SMAC huh, with that red weedy stuff hiding units ... I like! I think that being able to hide units and ambush is an important element to war ...
