oh and in my town somiking IS banned in public places. also dont give me that shot about maryland being a distinct culture. i think of that as moe of new england. which gives me an idea, why not make a scenario with california, texas, new england, southwest, midwest, north, ect.. all competing for nort america. sorda like a new civil war.

I must say xghost .... you do seem to be vehement about Texas never becoming a civilization on this game...why...we just want to make one not put it on an expansion pack (well actually I for one would support Firaxis through hell and high water if they did---------------------just deleted this as i felt it would be unchristion of me to say (so never say I never gave anything cause this is a reprieve from one heck of tyrade)------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
oh and one thing for you to think about....Texas supplies 80% of the US militaries officers and over half of its Soldiers over all so while you're enjoying your little state over there theres some of us who feel the need to protect it and all the others...and all without recognition for such.
To sum all this up .....develop a little respect for other states dude...you didnt see me comin onto this thread talkin bout how I don't like some of the other states in the US for one reason or another... you also don't see me talkin bout how uncivilized the other states are or how they screw up the US (and trust me I could)

i just wathched the movie traffic, and it gave me an idea. maybe someone could make a drug cartel scenario. if so, it would definately involve a texas civ. i dont, just a thought (prolly already been made)

a few things i'd like to mention here--
1) this was said way back and I don't think anyone touched on it, but to give the texans refining you'd have to give them all the requirements before it to make it work right? I gave myself Literature one time so I could build the Great Library early and see how the AI civs motored through techs (and have my wiseman discover them as a result), but I couldn't build it because I needed writing and the other stuff along with it.
2)if we're talking about states with distinctive culture, let's talk about West Virginia. Sorry if there are any West Virginnies reading this, but you know you guys are different. Roadkill is a delicacy, having a full set of teeth is marrying material, the manner of speaking is downright awful (we was thinkin' 'bout goin' down 'air"), and the license plates say "www.callwva.com" (so get on the internet to get the 800 number????)
3) as far as the Texans go, what about the Alamo as a wonder? You can just rename something else and make all the changes in the pediaicons file and whatnot. You could also make Sam Houston State the Great Library; there's no guaranteeing that you'll get it, but i don't think you can build civ-specific buildings?? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think it's funny, because I once witness an IRC conversation, where after a 30min debate, Texas could take on all 49 States, Isreal, China, and Canada all at the same time, and win.
Just that whole... "Texas is the bomb!" And stuff. I dunno, I find it sorta cheesy and stuff. Really, many of the Civs in Civ3 shouldn't be Civs, since many civs are actually spawned from uprisings in other civs. Like how America is nothing but colonies that rose agianst the Europian nations that spawned them.

I'm from Virginia so I understand this quite well. Dissing West Virginians is what unites Virginians. Not that many of the ones in my part of Virginia are much better, but its a principle!

Texas did have enough voters to vote itself into the nation, that wasn't a problem. By 1860, its population was over 600,000, and only 60,000 were needed to become a state. The majority of Texans wished to eventually become a part of the US, but some were skeptical about it because they did not want a war with Mexico (which happened anyways).
What most people don't know about Texas though, is at ANY time, it is allowed to split itself into anywhere from 3 to 5 different states. This was a part of the deal made when Texas was annexed into the Union, and when it later gave up its territory north and west of the current panhandle.
xghost: Many states give their children a quality education. I wouldn't single out one state for this. Each state has their own uniqueness, and its hard to say that one state stands out more than any other one. I lived in Ohio most of my life, and I can tell you many things that make Ohio different from other states.
I lived in Killeen, Texas and Brady, Texas. Killeen is about 60 miles north of Austin (population 88,000, Fort Hood is right next to it), and Brady is very close to the EXACT geographical center of Texas, about 100 miles south-southeast of Abilene and 85 miles east of San Angelo.
There are plenty of people here in Washington, as well as in Ohio and other states I've been to that "look" like cowboys. It is certainly a stereotype for Texas in my opinion.

Your figures here are off...this is misleading because most of the major military bases (such as Fort Hood, which is the largest in the US, and Fort Bliss, which is one of the largest) are located in Texas.
