i would choose

1. Rome - Nuff said
2. Egypt - if we got the pyrimids we need egypt
3. Greece - You can't have civilizations without the greeks.
4. Carthage - Rome needs a rival
5. Babylon - They got there gardens so they need to be in
6. China - The eastern Rome
7. Japan - World war 2 and the samuri, now one of the biggest economys needs to be in, they also humbled russia

15. Aztec - need some one for the south american contient
16. Iroquios (or a different america indian civ) - need to fill in the north
17. India - With religions as the new thing, hinduism needs a homeland
18. Polynesia - Rich culture, someone to cover the islands on a world map. and to fill rugby and grid iron teams and eat KFC.
19. Zulu - Just when everything seemed safe the zulu appeared

8.Scandinavia-Pillaged europe and settled north america

I'm sorry but that's way off. Yes scandinavia aka. the vikings and other barbarians pillaged the crap out of Europe. They even made it to America about 500 years earlier than Chris. They tried to settle it, but they failed. The closest place to the americas they settled was Greenland which is not green at all.

I'd say...

1. Rome
2. Greece
3. Egypt
4. Babylonia
5. Persia
6. Arabia
7. England
8. France
9. Germany
10. Spain
11. Russia
12. Scandinavia
13. China
14. Japan
15. India
16. Mongolia
17. America
18. Aztecs
19. Hebrews OR Ethiopia

If they have Judaism as a religion, then the Hebrews ought to have a place. It would look weird if they didn't. Aside from that, them being the foundation for Christianity and Islam is a big enough influence to include them into the game alone.

But if Judaism isn't one of the five religions, then I'd say throw in Ethiopia purely for the balance of representation. Otherwise include them in an expansion pack. The rest of the 18 are all pretty essential.

Rather than argue, I shall include my list of 19 civilisations and explanations for why.

1. SAXONS/HUNS I am poking fun at the Germans, and at the same time trying to combine the German-Austrian group into a single civilisation. They were a massive influence in history, destroying Rome, bringing about the age of Swordsmen, spreading Saxon culture, &c.

2. BRITONS by which I mean the Brittonic Celts who inhabited the British Isles in ancient times. DNA tests show that Britons were never displaced: they assimilated foreign cultures. Whether they like it or not, the Scots and English share common ancestory and created the British Empire by working together.

3. ROMANS who spread their empire as far north as Brittannia, as far west as Spain, and as far south as North Africa.

4. JAPANESE as they are unique and dangerous. They built the first Ironclad, and held empires more than once.

5. FRENCH who were the primary challenger to a British Empire. Ironically, the French are also of Brittonic decent but to combine French & Britons would be INSTANT CONQUEST VICTORY!

6. SPANISH with the first sea-faring global empire, destroyers of the Inca. Spanish are unique because they can actually smell gold a thousand miles away!

7. HAUDENOSAUNEE (Peace Mongers) who held a large land-mass in North America and allied with the Britons time and again. Even sent food to help during the Great Potatoe Famine.

8. INDIANS who built the great Taj Mahal, and controlled the massive empires of varying sizes. Current day India is actually one of the smallest Indian Empires.

9. PERSIANS who held a massive and unique empire, lost to the Macedonians of eastern-Europe but the language survives. Persian is a lovely language, and they made-up the idea of a Geenie.

10. MACADONIANS/GREEKS because they have Alexander the Great and left the most artistic and detailed statues ever crafted.

11. EGYPTIANS who had a very unique culture, built massive monuments from sandstone and held a large empire.

12. RUSSIANS who were influenced by Viking and Mongol migrants! Held one of the biggest and least well known empires, still hold vast political influence. Most powerful member of the former Soviet Block, and current centre-piece of the vast Russian Commonwealth.

13. MONGOLS which Ghengis Khan led to victory all over the place. Still exists as a poor land-locked nation between Siberia and China.

14. CHINESE because they built the Great Wall of China to hold the Mongols at bay.

15. INCA who suffered terribly at the hands of their own culture and later at the hands of Spanish Conquistadors. Left some funky ruins which people love to visit.

16. VIKINGS because they caused havok and held an empire spanning across Scandinavia and British Isles. They also controlled a rare example of European slave trade.

17. FLEMMISH/DUTCH homeland to William of Orange, and held an enormous sea-faring empire which included Australia and South Africa. Ultimately these places were swallowed into to the British Empire, as was William himself ;)

18. ETHIOPIANS who held a medieval christian empire, and because currently there is too little to represent the many African civilisations and this would help ballance that.

19. AMERICANS, because they sponsor game development.

Ommited: English, because American game-designers don't know what English means! The English Empire was medieval and held chunks of Europe. The English were Celts who had adopted a Saxon culture. English constitute part of the later British civilisation.

Another way to collect civs might be to cut the globe into chunks.

Then select the most ancient civ in each chunk: :hmm:
Macedonians, Egyptians, Persians, Mongols, Incas, Haudensosaunees, Aboriginals

Then select the most powerful civ in each chunk: :mischief:
British, Afrikaans, Indians, Germans, Brazillians, Americans, Japanese

Then select the most romantic civ in each chunk: :crazyeye:
French, Romans, Ottomans, Soviets, Mexicans, Canadians, Chinese

Now you have a strange mix of 21 civilisations, and some good battles.

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 Rome, Egypt, France, Greece, England, Babs, Persia, China are no question
9 America is going to be in civ, at least for commercial reasons
10 North american natives : Iroquois, Sioux, etc. But I,d like to see Alginquians, they helped the french North americn colonies to survive a long time
11 Incans, Mayans or Aztecs
12 I'd like to see Carthage or Phoenicia here
13 Russia is sure, at least nearly sure, to be in
14 Ottomans are to importants to be ignored
15 African civ : Zulus? Mali? What are the other ones?
16 Japan
17 Spain discoverd/ settled south America - Brazil
18 Which was Portuguese
19 Germany was important at all the different ages : Fall of Rome, Middle ages, Protestantism, WW1 and 2
I'm almost sure I forgot some thing, but anyway...

You are funny. Canada ressembles USA so much, Quebec is better.

but they still settled just not succesfully

Usually when someone says that a group or in this case civilization settles an area. they mean succesfully unless stated other wise. and the way you have that posted it just seems like your emplying they did it succesfully which is of course not true.

The most influential civs should be among the 18 civs for civ4.

By Geography:
Africa
-Egypt
-Ethiopia
-Nubia
-Ashante

Middle East
-Arabia
-Assyria
-Mycenea
-Greece

European
-Saxon(english)
-Gauls(french)
-Etruscans(rome)
-Spanish

Far East
-India
-Khmer
-Ch'na
-Mongolia

Americas
-Anasazi
-Olmec(which strangely enough came from Africa, and were influenced by the Xi of Ch'na)

Japan, Korea, Vietnam and much of the Asian civs were all once provinces of Ch'na back when it was doing its thing during its Age of Exploration.

American is a melting pot of all the world's civs, it really can not be said that american is truelly american. If that is the case, then the native tribes of the americas are the original americans.

Hoping that I have not stepped on anyones toes with the forementioned statements. Just bringing up historical points is all.
