The Art of Lisa Frank - Genius or Satanspawn?

I was first turned on to Lisa Frank in a K-Mart during my art school days in the late '80s. I immediately thought that I was looking at some of the most vital American art of this era. Over time the style has mellowed but it still remains true to it's "psychedelic teddy bear" esthetic. I wish I could find some examples of the early stuff but these will have to do.

Since my mother was an art teacher I like to think I have an aesthetic appreciation of this stuff. Er, yeah, right.

That stuff is just nasty, a big technicolour heave from the bowels of the Franklin Mint or some other purveyors of quality crap.

What's next? The sculptural masterpiece that is My Little Pony?

Artisitically, it's a decent drawing. . . .but there are some colors that just don't do well together, and Ms Frank managed to get most of them in the same picture.

She's certainly talented as far as the technical aspect goes...but aesthetically they are quite unappealing. Still, they are made for girls in grade school.

Satanspawn would probably make cool art.

I cant decide which one is more disturbing, the first one or the second one. Compared to the first two, the third one is almost normal. This work looks like Ms. Frank had a beaker of LSD spilled on her and accidentally skinpopped 40 doses before sitting down to paint one day
